The sweet southern accent seemed to carry a fair ways in the Westchester Forrest. Marie and Mason had walked for about ten minutes in solid silence and now they were both a good distance away from the school. Even though at the moment Mason was making her the tiniest bit nervous, Marie knew it was a good thing they were in the woods. A very good thing, Marie thought as she leaned against a large oak and watched Mason pace like an animal that doesn't know if he wants to attack or run. No, this here ain't Mason. Mason was at the mall with me. Mason ate with me. This ain't Mason. This here is Cougar. I should have beaten the little fuck's head in. Mason's thoughts were running a mile a minute. If he were to tell the truth, he really didn't understand how some teenage kid could set him off like that. He. Made. Her. Cry! That's a fine and fucking dandy reason. She should have let me nail the fucker. Marie just watched as he constantly clenched and unclenched his fists as he paced. That's not what made her nervous, though. No, what made her nervous were the ten-inch adamantium claws that popped from between his knuckles each time he did it. It was safe to say that Cougar felt very confused, angry and a little frightened. Confusion he could hate, but accept. Anger was a pain in the ass, but could be manageable if he tried hard. Frightened. It was a simple word, yet it was part of the reason he was confused and angry. He was frightened of a little Southern girl by the name of Rogue. He was afraid of her touch... But not for the same reason that little punk teenager was. No, he was scared of the calming effect it had on him. Oh, he wasn't afraid of being calm. Calm was good. It meant people didn't die. However, the Animal Within rebelled against the control the touch had with fright and a touch of anger. Combined with the anger he felt toward the dumbass at lunch, Cougar was walking a fine line between saneness and a maddening rage. He knew that he should get away from Rogue, he really did. However, a part of him rebelled against that as well. He knew that he had to make a decision; A decision about Rogue. As it happens, the decision was made for him. Rogue never would know where she got the courage to do what she did next, but she got it nevertheless. Besides, she had a gut feeling that Mason would never really hurt her. She was just glad she had the courage to do what she did for the simple fact that Logan acted sort of like this right before he disappeared for weeks at a time. "Mason," she stated with a clear and sharp voice. Mason's head snapped around to Rogue. She was slowly walking towards him with her hands held up in a manner that told him he needed to relax. Mason had the wildest urge to run at that moment and he couldn't help but scold himself for the almost ridiculous urge. Before he knew what happened, Rogue had her arms wrapped around him in a loose hug. If he thought a hand on the shoulder had a calming effect on him, this was monumental. Even Rogue was surprised at the reaction her soft hug gave Mason. He was strung tighter than a guitar string before she hugged him. He tensed just a little more at the beginning, then all of his muscles seems to relax almost like a balloon deflating. I'll be damned. "Sugah, I know Todd is an asshole," she said softly, speaking of the boy at lunch. "But ya'll can't be doin' what ya did. The Prafessa will throw you out. Ya don't want that. Ah don't want that." All the time she spoke, she kept hugging him and rubbing small circles on his back with her gloved hand. That was when she noticed that he was growling at her. She was startled for a moment, then almost laughed despite herself. It wasn't a growl, it was a purr. "I still should have hit him." His voice was tired, yet it oddly had a contented sound to it. It was like that he was accepting the way things were, for the moment. "I know, sugah. I know." She would never tell him how warm it made her feel when he took up for her like he did. She released her hug on him and led the way to a big rock that she usually sat on, but it was big enough for two people. The whole way, though, she never took her hand off his lower back. She waited until they were seated before she spoke again. "Don't get me wrong, sugah, ah liked it when ya took up for me... Ya'll just used a bit too much force." Mason looked at the southern girl appraisingly, and reached out and brushed some bangs away from her beautiful eyes, never once fearing her skin. He did notice the inward flinch, though, and knew then and there that she was scared of herself too, just as much as he was scared of himself. "You are somthin' else, Marie," he said softly. "What happened to callin' me 'Rogue'?" she asked with a coy smile. "A rogue is someone that you don't want to be around. And I want you around," he replied as he took her left hand into his and brought it up to his lips, kissing it gently. "Fer a long time." He said this so gently that she almost didn't hear it. ************************** Charles Xavier eased out of Rogue's mind with a small smile on his lips. The incident in the cafeteria had... Well, it had worried him on more than one level. It worried him for Rogue, because of the way she had been treated. Rogue was very fragile when it came to the subject of her skin. It worried him about Mason for the obvious reasons. The young man if he was young was very violent in nature. That had more to do with his mutation than him, but some of it was him. It surprised Charles deeply that Rogue had such a calming effect on the boy... and the Animal Within. That surprise led him to a course of action. That particular course of action had Scott Summers standing in front of him. "I thought we had rules against that sort of thing." Scott was frustrated he could admit that. However, he had been told that this boy was just as feral as Logan and that had set off Cyclops' protective streak against Charles' idea. Just the idea of it made him stand with a stiff back and a scowl on his face. "Coed roommates is against the rules, I know this. I also know that Rogue has such a calming influence on our young Mr. Creed it is almost unbelievable, considering his feral disposition. He hasn't responded to anyone else in this school as calmly as he has to Rogue. It is not like they can get into much mischief in their room, Scott." Xavier responded with a sad smile. If Rogue did not learn to control her mutation, then it was doubtful she would ever get up to any mischief. Scott let out a little sigh. It wasn't that he had anything against Mason; hell, he didn't even know him. He was just worried about Rogue. The little southern bell had been through so much since she had been at the mansion he just didn't want her feelings hurt more than they already were. Since he knew Logan, Scott knew for a fact that feral dispositions had that habit. "I guess you're right, Professor. I just worry about her, is all." "That's noble of you, Scott. However, she is almost eighteen years old now. Look on the bright side. I haven't asked Rogue yet. She might just say no." He spoke to his protge with a small smile. "If I were you, I'd get to know the young man. He will be in one of your classes after all." The Professor paused for moment as he thought of something. Then he took on a wicked smile Scott had never seen him wear before as he spoke. "Just think, Scott. A little Logan of your very own." Scott just placed his face in his hands and groaned. The Professor just laughed. ************************ 2: 47AM Mason jerked straight up in his bed with an inaudible gasp, his claws shooting out by reflex alone. The remnants of his nightmare were still very fresh in his mind as he looked around his darkened room. It took him a few moments to figure out where he was as he wiped the sweat from his brow, after he sheathed his claws. Even though it was only a nightmare, it was still hauntingly real to the feral mutant. He could almost still feel the hot/cold feeling of adamantium as it was being grafted to his bones. It was a feeling that a person wouldn't soon forget. I wish Chuck would hurry up and find the fuckers, he thought as a low growl resonated from his chest. Mason slipped out of the bed and started walking through the darkened room, finding the light switch on the wall. When the room was illuminated with light he stared at it with amazement. Actually, it wasn't the room that amazed him. It was Marie, plain and simple. Then again, that girl had amazed him greatly since he had known her. Cougar looked around the room in amusement. Where the room hardly looked lived in before, it now looked like a teenager had lived there for a while. Hell, there were even posters of scantily clad female singers and models on the walls. That had really surprised him, because it wasn't even remotely his idea. Marie told him that boys should have things like that in their room for the simple reason that teenage girls also had them in their room. When he had asked if she had half naked women hanging up on her wall, he was promptly slapped on the shoulder, then watched as she just rolled her beautiful brown eyes at him and muttered "boys". The thought of Marie was still a little confusing and if he were truthful with himself somewhat frightening. Mason was not used to the feeling he was having for the girl at all. However, ever since she had stayed with him in the woods, calming him down, he was more than a little comfortable with her. It wasn't love at first sight, but it was sort of like having just had a conversation with someone and feeling like you have known them your whole life. It basically made him feel mushy in ways that he didn't figure he could. It was very strange. What was stranger yet and a little frightening was what Professor Xavier had proposed. He didn't think the man could surprise him anymore than he did when he asked him if he wanted to stay at the school. He was wrong. Chuck out and out asked Rogue if she would be willing to be Mason's roommate. That freaked Mason out. What surprised him was the fact that the suggestion only made him mildly uneasy. If it had been anyone else besides Rogue, he would have probably freaked out. The funny part, at least to Mason, was Marie's face. Her eyes opened so wide at the suggestion that he was afraid for a moment that they were going to pop out of her head. Then she seemed to control her reaction when she noticed him staring at her. Mason knew it was almost inevitable that her eyes glazed over and she spoke with the professor telepathically. Then she just simply said that it was a great idea, as long as Mason agreed. Cougar was lost when the southern bell turned those big brown puppy-dog eyes on him. What else could he do? He caved in a mere heartbeat. In that moment, Mason came to the conclusion that there was very little that he would deny the pretty girl with the deadly skin. If he had to have a roommate, it might as well be her. There was one thing that sort of surprised him almost as much as the suggestion for him and Marie to share a room and that was Wolverine's reaction. Now, from what Cougar could understand, going off what Marie had willingly told him about the man, Logan considered Marie to be like the daughter he never had. Basically, the man had a very deep love for her. So, his reaction severely surprised Cougar. Cougar figured the man would be pissed. However, that wasn't the case. In fact, Wolverine had a sort of coy little smile on his face when he heard the news and a coy smile on someone like Logan made Cougar a little damn nervous. He didn't know what was in the old man's head, but whatever it was, it amused the man. Great, I'm gonna have a roommate tomorrow. Mason looked at the clock on his nightstand and corrected the assessment to "today". The feral mutant really hated his nightmares. He didn't know what they were like before he lost his memory, but now... Now they killed every ounce of sleepiness that he had. There was no hope of going back to sleep. Mason walked over to his closet and drew out a fresh set of clothes and proceeded to get dressed, since he knew that trying to force sleep would be meaningless. After he finished getting dressed in an all black outfit he threw on his duster and grabbed the smokes that Logan had given him, and made his way out to the balcony. God, how he really loved that balcony. In his opinion, it was the best place in the whole mansion. Cougar walked onto the balcony with light steps as he breathed in the night air. There wasn't a cloud in the sky as he looked up at the stars. The crickets that were chirping around the mansion were a very welcome sign to the feral mutant. It was a sign of the peace in the area. A person could tell a lot about their surroundings if they just stopped and listened. Mason didn't know how he knew these things, but his instincts completely agreed with him, so he knew it to be true. It was when the crickets in the immediate area quit singing their song that Mason knew something was off. He sniffed the night air and found that there was a scent that was out of place. Cinnamon? What the hell? That was when a yellow rain jacket came into view at the edge of the woods. Well, Jubilation Lee. What the hell are you doing out at three o'clock in the morning? It was at that moment that Mason lips formed a reckless grin. With a nothing more than a standing jump, Mason leaped up onto the rail of the balcony. It was at that moment he balanced with negligent ease and then jumped from the balcony, doing a lazy flip in the air as he raced for the ground. When he landed perfectly on his feet, he finally realized just how stupid of a stunt he just pulled. I could have broken my damn fool neck, he thought outrageously. Then he thought about how odd it was that he was able to do something like that so easily. With a movement of the head Mason looked to the last spot he had seen Jubilee she was still there. The only difference was she was staring at him wide-eyed with her mouth slightly gaping. Mason smirked at her as he made his way to the edge of the woods where she was standing. Jubilee couldn't believe what she had just seen. The boy known as Cougar just did a jumping freefall flip from over twenty feet up and landed like it was nothing. She had just turned his way when he had jumped on the rail. Now that he was walking towards her she started to get over her shock. She didn't want to look like an awestruck dweeb. As she watched his steady gait towards her, she could not help but lick her lips, which suddenly felt dry. Get a grip, Jubes. He's just a boy. Ok, an incredibly scrumptious looking boy, but a boy nonetheless. Hell, I look older than he does. However, she couldn't help but notice what most of the other girls that have met him noticed. It was the sheer animal magnetism that he just seemed to exude. She waited to speak until he got close enough that she wouldn't have to be loud; she definitely didn't want to get caught after curfew. His light sea-green eyes seemed to sparkle with mischief as he stopped about four feet from her. They were so different than they were when he was in the cafeteria around a bunch of people. "What are you doing out here?" This was asked with forced casualness. She was just glad her voice didn't crack. "I could ask the same to you, Darlin'. Curfew ended more than a bit ago." What is it with me calling pretty girls Darlin'? As Mason looked at her, he couldn't deny that she was most certainly pretty a real Asian beauty. With her yellow rain jacket open he could see the tight belly shirt she was wearing and how the tight jeans she was wearing hugged her in all the right ways. Jubilee blushed at the endearment. "I was just taking a walk in the woods... To clear my head, ya know?" "Uh-huh." "Really it was just a harmless walk," she replied when she heard the sheer skepticism in his voice. She paused for about ten seconds and when she saw that he didn't believe a word she said she spoke the truth. "Fine. I hitched a ride to a nightclub in town earlier. Happy? Are ya gonna rat me out? Because, like, Rogue would be so mad at you if you did. So, you could make her really happy by not saying anything." All that came out in one breath. It was all Mason could do to keep an honest to goodness laugh forced down. Normally, he didn't like too much talking, but coming from her, it was down right adorable. He didn't know what he was like before he lost his memory but, at that moment, he was pretty damn certain that he had a weakness for cute girls. "Yer secret's safe with me, Darlin'. Though, I do wish you had brought something for me to drink back," he replied with a chuckle. "C'mon, I'll walk you back." "Wow. What a gentlemen." "Shut up." And with that, the two mutants walked back into the Mansion. <1st attachment end> ----- ASSM Moderation System Notice------ Notice: This post has been modified from its original format.
