"You ride around that side, and hide behind the ridge," he directed. "I will take Ladnar, Durip, Token, and Kalhune with me. You take the others with you. When you arrive, signal your readiness. When you see me start my gallop toward the village - and not before - you lead your contingent and do the same. We take as many as possible: Each man will be expected to get at least one." "What if things go wrong?" Ragnor asked. "If we do things right, things won't go wrong," Dalvid responded dryly. "I want to avoid violence if possible. No man will draw his sword unless I draw mine first. Is that understood?" Dalvid asked. "Yes Sir," Ragnor responded. Dalvid peered over at Ragnor's hand twitching impatiently on the hilt of his sword. "You're not in the royal marines anymore" he added, "we avoid violence here." "Yes Sir," Ragnor responded, taking his hand off his sword, and moving it about nervous, wondering what else could occupy it, settling on scratching his unshaved cheek. "What do we do after we've taken them?" Ragnor inquired. "We gallop away, as fast as possible," Dalvid responded. "I will make sure all get away. Make sure you watch me; if my sword is drawn, then you will come to assist. If my sword is not drawn, keep riding away. And remember, they may struggle. They may struggle a surprising amount. We don't want to hurt them, but we don't have to be gentle either," he finished, smiling grimly. "Yes Sir. I understand." Ragnor answered with acknowledgement. "Every man must make it back to camp," Dalvid instructed. "I have never lost a man, and I don't intend to now. Remember, these are only simple villagers, they probably don't have weapons. There shouldn't be any need for violence." With that the lesson was over. Dalvid led his four men slowly, cautiously, down the ridge, and into a glen. Kalhune, with his keen eyesight and reliable manner was placed on watch for the signal. Dalvid signalled for his men to dismount. "It should take them a quarter-watch to reach their position," he observed, beginning to distribute rations of bread and dates. "Let's rest here a while. This should go well, although I am a little worried about that Ragnor fellow; I feel that if he were to have his way, every man in the village would lay dead by sunset." The men dropped to the ground, sitting and talking. They were all slightly nervous, as always, but having all done this before, they were growing accustomed to it. The wages were good, and the work exciting; who would be a farmer or a fisherman when one could get a job like this? They started talking, sharing past experiences, and joking, getting louder and louder. Durip was just starting to tell the story of the one time an arrow almost hit him, when suddenly Dalvid gestured for them all to be silent. Gesturing towards the woods, he pointed out a woman, walking in the forest, apparently picking flowers. Dalvid whispered for his men to remain still, and slowly, stealthily moved towards her. She was beautiful: brown hair, blue eyes, nicely tanned skin. He motioned for Token to follow him, and go around behind her. Token quickly got into position, and then at Dalvid's signal, leapt out behind the woman, and smothered her mouth, grabbing her hands. The woman struggled, but to no avail. Soon she found herself surrounded by no less than five armed men, cowering in fear, as Token held her mouth. "He is going to let go of your mouth, and you will not scream." Dalvid instructed. "Understood?" She did her best to motion to nod. "Very good" he said, and motioned for Token to remove his hand. "Please sir," she started, tears filling her eyes with fear. "You will be silent," Dalvid instructed. "You will speak only when spoken to." She fell silent before him. Dalvid motioned to Token, and Token produced a rope, quickly tying her hands in front of her. She started to say something, but a stern look from Dalvid made her change her mind. "What is your name woman?" He asked. "Li'sar Sir," she said whimpering. Dalvid smiled. He was hatching a plan to make this raid a few percent more profitable. "We will tie her to a tree," He instructed "After we are finished with the raid, Token and I will make a detour back here and get her. Then we will meet you back at camp. Kalhune will be in command in my absence. Understood?" The men nodded in agreement, and were already grinning at the catch they had made. Sometimes little bonuses like this just happened. Li'sar found herself tied to the nearest tree, unable to move. Token moved to gag her as well. "Don't worry about the gag," Dalvid instructed. "I have told her she is not allowed to speak or make noise, and she won't, will she?" he asked, looking at her. "N-no sir," she replied. "Excellent" Dalvid said, smiling. Time passed. Li'sar sat, shuddering, terrified out of her mind. Dalvid looked over at her every now and again. Something about her appealed to him. He was looking forward to tonight, in a way he hadn't for a very long time. Finally Kalhune spoke, "Sir, they are in position." The men mounted their horses. Dalvid waited, looking at the village; waiting for an opportune time. They would strike before the men of the village arrived back from the fields. He analysed the individual houses, watched the women of the village, wondering which would be the best takes. Suddenly he made his decision. It was time! Spurring his horse, he started galloping towards the village, raising his hand to signal to the others. He saw Ragnor's men emerge from the opposite ridge. He had estimated the distances well, they would each arrive at the village at almost exactly the same time. As the people of the village heard the galloping, and saw the mounted warriors charging at the village, they began riding in different directions in panic, screaming in terror. Dalvid decided upon his target, a young woman who looked young and attractive enough, in the three seconds he could lay his eyes on her anyhow. He bent down and wrapping his arms around her waist, hoisted her up onto his horse, holding her around the waist. He looked around, confident his own men would do well, but a little concerned as to the experience of Ragnor's company. Indeed, Ragnor still had not gotten a woman, and neither had several of his men. Dalvid was forced to come to a virtual standstill, waiting. Then he noticed that some men from the village had noticed something, and were coming back towards it. They were still a way off, but were now running. He considered that they might even be armed. "Hurry up!" He shouted as largely as he could. "Look take that one!" He pointed to one man. He didn't like the feeling of being a sitting duck, as he held this struggling woman around the waist. Finally all his men had grabbed one. Dalvid looked over his shoulder at the approaching townsmen. They were within two hundred paces now. He spurred his horse, and away they went. He had not seen a stables in the village. The villagers probably didn't have any horses; there would be no meaningful chase. Dalvid signalled for the other men to go on, while he and Token made their detour to the glade that Li'sar was tied up in. Dalvid was pleased to see her tied just as she was left. He and Token dismounted from their horses, letting the women they held go free. The woman Token held tried to run. Token held her tightly. "You women don't want to make things worse for yourselves," Dalvid said gruffly. He held onto the girl he had caught by the wrist, she broke down in tears and started begging to be let free. "Silence woman!" He ordered. He motioned for Token to produce the rope. Soon all three women were tied by the hands in front of them, and tied together in a line. "Is it just me, or do these females get more and more stroppy each time?" Token asked, irritated at the difficulty they were giving him. "It's unfortunate that they'll have to walurn to your homes." He considered the odds. These were not fighting men, and though he didn't consider himself a warrior, he knew how to use a sword. Still, he wouldn't want to have to fight all of them. "We won't give up without a fight" the man answered him, and the others jeered in agreement. Dalvid noticed out of the corner of his eye, his men coming, riding through the forest. They had come at last! Not a moment too soon. His confidence rose. "We will fight you if we must," Dalvid responded, and he drew his sword; it flashed in the sunlight. The blade was two full feet long. An intimidating sight. He brandished it, threateningly. The men paused. Two of them readied their arrows; Dalvid doubted whether their arrows could even reach him at this range. "This may be your last chance," Dalvid shouted. "I am backed by my men. We are all fully armed and mounted. We could slay every last one of you if we wanted." "What men?" The leader sneered, and with that his men started advancing up the hill. Dalvid didn't move, looking down at them, sword drawn. Ragnor was the first to reach him, seeing his leader with his sword drawn, he drew his also. The sight of one mounted warrior atop a hill soon changed to five. "Let's destroy them!" Ragnor exclaimed. "Hold!" Dalvid said firmly, hoping the men wouldn't hear of his reluctance. The villagers paused. Dalvid sought a diplomatic solution again. "This may be your very last chance. My lieutenant here is ready to cut you all limb from limb." "You can't just take our women and get away with it!" One man screamed. "We just did" Dalvid responded, noticing them still advancing. He had been planning to simply take the women and run, but this had come to a head. He would have to stare them down now; he would give them an ultimatum, and if they defied it, his threat would not be a bluff. Dalvid pointed his sword at a rock that the men were approaching. "Any of you who passes that rock will be cut down" he said. "Who wants to be first?" Then he turned to Ragnor, "if any of them pass the rock, see to it that they die. I will leave you to see that it is as I say." With that, he turned from the hill crest, and made his way down to find the three miserable women, still tied to the tree. Looking at the ropes, he saw that they had been trying to get free. The oldest trick in the book. The first thing taught in this line of work is how to tie a proper knot, one that none could ever escape from. "You soil your pretty wrists" he said to Li'sar, seeing the rope burns she had given herself. "Valuan men are not pleased by such things." She spat at him. Spat at him! He raised his hand, as if to strike, but then withdrew it. No, the time for punishment, the time for teaching of lessons was not now; not yet. He stored that one inside, knowing that he would get his opportunity to teach her a little later. He looked towards the hillcrest. A disappointed Ragnor led the men down from it. The villagers were not quite that foolish. For all his misgivings, Dalvid couldn't help thinking that having a bloodthirsty warrior as a member of his company was good under some circumstances. He would have hated to have to have killed one of the men himself. Dalvid lifted Li'sar onto his horse, and Token and Kalhune took the other two. Having dispensed with the villagers, Dalvid was happy that tonight there would be no chance of a confrontation with them arriving at the camp. He and his men could relax. "The villagers said that they were going to send for help - send for soldiers from Sernan" Token reported to Dalvid. "Such an empty threat," Dalvid said. "I don't think they even had a horse in the village. It would be a day before they got the word out, and even if soldiers came from Sernan, they would have no hope of overtaking us before we arrive safely in Valua. Even with the females, it's no more than two days from our camp back to Valua." His men nodded in agreement. Villagers often made threats like that in such situations. Dalvid knew from years of experience that there was little they could do. As they arrived back at their camp, Dalvid mused on what an interesting night it was going to be. -- Pursuant to the Berne Convention, this work is copyright with all rights reserved by its author unless explicitly indicated. +---------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | alt.sex.stories.moderated ----- send stories to: | | FAQ: Moderator: | +---------------------------------------------------------------------------+ |Discuss this story and others in alt.sex.stories.d, look for subject {ASSD}| |Archive at Hosted by | +---------------------------------------------------------------------------+
