He hated falling asleep on the taxi stand. A dark woman with deep-set eyes stared at him. He leaned his head to one side. She winked. He smiled relieved. "You available," the old woman asked. My granddaughter and I need a ride to Dumont. "Sure," Henry said. Let's go. At the first traffic light Henry stared at the girl in the backseat sitting next to the old woman. The girl obviously respected the old woman, but was pissed at her. "How you all doing back there," Henry asked using his professional voice. "Fine the girl said." "You realize the fare will be twenty dollars or so." "We got the money," the girl said. "I have to go inside for it, but I got it." "That's ok" It was obvious that Henry wasn't sure. "Don't worry. I would never stiff a driver. My brother drives a cab in the city." I am not from around here, but I have come to help my grandma when she goes to the hospital Monday. "Leave the driver alone. He doesn't need to listen to you and your complaints. You are coming home with me. I will hear nothing more about it. "I love you grandma," and the girl turned silent. "Thanks," the girl said again. When they arrived in front of the house, the old woman and the girl left together, and the girl again promised to come out with the money. Henry hated to wait. It was a private house. If she didn't come out, he would have to call the cops, and he didn't want to think of the girl in trouble. Henry knew he wouldn't hassle the girl if she wouldn't pay, and that would cost him money. Henry sensed trouble and he wanted to get on but just as he thought of leaving without the money, she came down the stairs. She had changed clothes and put on lipstick. Her hair was brushed back from her head. Henry brightened and looked up. "Sorry I took so long. My grandmother hid my money, and couldn't remember where it was." "That's Ok. It comes to $21.65." "Yes, I know. Here's twenty five, OK? When Henry tried to make change, she said, "oh no, please keep it." "Sure." Henry pocketed the money rolling it onto his taxi stash that fit perfectly in the top pocket of his shirt. Carefully, he buttoned the cash down, and as he did he looked at this beautiful girl who smiled and liked him. "My name's Delores," she said . "Thanks for trusting me. See I did pay." Henry relaxed glad it had ended well. The girl really bounces. God, I like her. Before Henry had time to cut the conversation short, she gave him an old business card. The Dr's name had been crossed out, and Delores, 933-2389 written clearly in red marker over the card. "I can't call you," Henry said. "Why"? "You're under age. What would your grandmother say? She'd string me up." " "I am nineteen. I am also pregnant and my boy friend just left me. So there you know the whole sad tale, and I have no secrets left. So call me. Grandma won't say anything. Believe me. She told me she thought you were a good man, but then she says that about all guys who know how to smile. So I wouldn't get my head out joint if I were you. "I am fifty you know." "Fifty. Hell. You don't seem that old. Stop lying." The girl paused and smiled stamping her foot for emphasis. "Fuck it. Call." "You're kidding?" "I need someone to talk to. Can you do that? I am not looking to fuck up your life or fuck you. I loved your voice." "Your full of it," but he laughed when he said it. "Besides, you reading the Grapes of Wrath. I just finished it for my Lit class at City. I'm a freshman." "Sure, I'll try." "Tonight, later, when you are off your shift, OK" Henry liked that the girl was aggressive. She took what she wanted. I bet she's got a head on her shoulders as well as a great ass. "Maybe. I'm not promising. Then Henry said, "you know I taught there, at City." "Really"? "Are you sure you are 19?" I will show you my license. Don't fucken call see if I care." Dolores started to leave, and Henry reached out, gently, and stopped her. "I'll call but not tonight." "Please," she insisted. "Did you really teach at City? Why'd you stop?" Henry laughed, put the cab in gear, and didn't answer at first. "When I tell you why, maybe you will run like hell." "Come on. What could you have done? I knocked up one of my students and I decided not to go back when my suspension was up. "Well you don't have to worry about me. I am already there." Henry needed to look back before he pulled out into traffic, but he didn't want to catch her eye. He wasn't sure he would call, even after what he had said. He wanted to remember her as she first ran down the porch. She was like a woman and a girl in love with everything that would be born again. I know I will idealize her. When Henry finally pulled around the corner where the trees were lonely and the houses were maple dark even at the top of sunshine, he felt much better about his day. As Henry drove away, Dolores waved. Henry didn't see her. She knew he would call. When she got back inside sitting on the toilet, she knew that her underpants were wet. Well I am pregnant. No, there's more and she smiled wiping herself, getting up quickly, looking at her face in the mirror. Not bad. I still got it. Later, her grandmother told her she looks wonderful pregnant. You're glowing. Dolores Baker laughed and ran down stairs to wait for that phone call. Sitting on the couch watching a sexy movie on cable, Dolores looked at her newly enlarged breasts. Rubbing the nipples, she put her hands in her pants and thought of the taxi driver. He had a hardon. That is how I know he will call. How can he not? Much Later, Henry riding out on the highway going back to Fort Lee from another call wondered how chance governed things. She looks just like Laurie. What the fuck?
