Social Worker: Where did sex fit in to life at the orphanage? Javier: Some of the older street girls were child prostitutes. Roberto didn't care; he said they could be changed, cured. But later he put their experience to use. He asked them to work with the others, boys and girls, to show them, at least the ones who didn't know it already, how sex was done, to make them want to do it when he told them to, with him or with others. Finally one girl gets on her knees and puts her boy's penis in her mouth, and they everybody starts in, boys sucking on vaginas and putting their penises everywhere, and the party lasts all evening. It becomes a sort of orgy, changing partners and everything. It was one of very few films that Roberto showed us. He said it was his best, because it had a real plot. A sort of plot anyway. And then his eyes would go lustful, and his hands would wander to her breasts, feel her all over, whether others were there or not. Then the girls would spend the night with them in the guest rooms. Those were the North Americans and Europeans and Japanese who would buy the films. These were a very mysterious bunch of men. And they could be rough in bed. But at least they used condoms. Roberto told them they had to. Social worker: Did you have sex with many outsiders? Weren't you just indoor prostitutes instead of street prostitutes? María Luisa: Not at all. There were not too many outsiders, just a few every so often as I said. There were Roberto and Ivana, and then later a couple of others who acted regularly sometimes in the films. But apart from films, there were occasionally groups of foreigners who came to stay for a few days, usually two to four of them at a time. If there were more they would have to double up because there were only four guest rooms. Or maybe Roberto would have two girls for each man, competing for his penis, one of them after the other sucking it, the two of them together brining him to orgasm. But they know too much, too much about sex, to integrate into normal families with other children. No orphanage would take them either, even if it had room. Social worker: Was there homosexual sex, boys with boys, girls with girls? Javier: I wouldn't do anything like that. Some of the little boys played with each other's penises, even sucked them and so on for the camera, as when Roberto put honey on them. But Roberto didn't approve of older kids, of school age and especially past puberty, having sex like that. So he didn't film it and we didn't do it. Social worker: Were there relationships among yourselves? Or did you only have sex when you were told to have it, for the films, or with Roberto and Ivana? María Luisa: Of course once a child has learned about sex, at a certain age you can't stop her, or him, from wanting it. This became a problem with the adolescents right away. There might have been bedlam. So they divided the orphanage, and kids from the age of ten or so were separated. Originally the house had been two dwellings that had been combined. Roberto and Ivana had them divided again, so you couldn't just go from one to the other, and so the girls were in one, with the smaller kids, and the boys in the other, with the guest rooms and Roberto and Ivana, who slept together. There was a baby nurse. She was involved in all this too, except that she never had sex with us, she just helped organize the kids, fed and bathed them, worked with the maid to clean up, do the laundry and so on. Of course we had to help with the cleaning and cooking too. And there were two or three teachers as well as Roberto and Ivana, who taught us English. The teachers were only there during the daytime, and there were different ones over the years. Surely they must have known about the sex, but they never said anything and it didn't go on in front of them. They always told us how lucky we were to be at the orphanage. They knew, of course, how tough it is for street kids. And for them, too, jobs aren't easy to get, and I imagine they would have been discreet about anything they saw or heard. Social worker: But what kind of relationships did you kids have with each other? When you weren't forced to have sex with Roberto and Ivana, or in front of the camera. María Luisa: Some of us had boyfriends from inside the orphanage, although that wouldn't have stopped us from having sex on command with or for Roberto and Ivana. Whatever relationships we did have couldn't last, because the boys, too, were movie studs, having sex with different girls and women all the time. Kids could legitimately leave the orphanage anytime from age sixteen if they could get a job, and they had to go at eighteen. Social worker: And what did the rest of you do after the orphanage closed? María Luisa: As Javier said, a few of the very small kids were adopted and are going abroad. Nobody wanted the older kids who had known all about sex, because the experts said they would pollute innocent kids wherever they went. Those older ones who were smarter or neater or more ambitious tried to get jobs, maybe in a shop the way I did. The best jobs all go to the people who look glamorous and who have skills. And who speak English. We had gone to school at the orphanage, Roberto taught us about computers, about word processing. And English. Some girls and boys managed to work in offices. Many just disappeared. We don't see each other any more. Javier: I was kept on for a while to help with the younger boys, until they could be placed. But the landlord is taking back the houses now. I don't know where I am going to go. Social worker: What did you like best about the orphanage? Javier: Football! We had our own team, and we were good. We also had tickets to all the games at the stadium. The owner of the team there was a friend of Roberto's. María Luisa: The orphanage gave us our lives back. We were safe. I was just happy to be off the street. What are your feelings towards Roberto and Ivana? María Luisa: We have had counseling for the past couple of months and we knew anyway that ordinary children are not exposed to the kind of sex that we were. But you have to think of the alternative. If it weren't for Roberto and Ivana we would be dead. We know that they are perverted, but they made it possible for us to have a life beyond the street. Except for sex, they were good to us. Social worker: What do you want for the rest of your life? María Luisa: I want to get married and I want a family and I want an ordinary life. I want nice things, money, innocent kids. I want to be normal. I don't want to think of the films. There was no romance in them. I want romance. Roberto used to tell us that we were learning to act and could become real TV and film actresses someday. I never believed it though. We could dream of being in the culebrónes, the ones we watched every day. But it was only that, a dream just like their plots. Javier: I want to learn a trade in depth and get qualified. I want a good life, far away from the street. Are you going to help us? Social worker: We are trying to raise money. We want you to have a good life. You deserve it.
