I asked my young bride, feeling a little bit exasperated, with both hands extended at my side in a shrug. "What's wrong?" Seated across from me upon the bed in our private suite, Lindsay pouted and shook her head in a discouraging manner. "I can't believe you, Jeremy," she said, her tone showing a varied range of emotions - from pain to sadness, to anger. "How could you be so insensitive? After everything that Pamela said to you - she poured her absolute heart out to you - you say her and Trish were STILL NOT WELCOME HERE." "I did it for us, sweetheart," I told her, my voice soft and compassionate. I could not stand it when Lindsay was even the tiniest bit upset with me. I had to correct this. "Pamela and Trish mean well, I'm sure, but having them here would do nothing but harm our four-way marriage with Devon and Amy. Pamela and Trish can even have the absolute best of intentions - they just want to fit in - but still, their presence would cause problems in our marriage. Trust me." "How do you know that for sure?" Lindsay asked, obviously becoming more upset with every passing second. "Settle down," I told her, holding both hands in front of me and waving them gently. "It could be anything, princess. Maybe things that none of us would even notice, or realize that are there. But when those little things add up, it can turn out to be a big problem." "Like what?" "I'll give you an example, sweetheart. Maybe one day you really feel like going down to the beach and spending a lot of time with Amy. It's all that you want to do that day. But when you approach Amy and ask her to go the beach with you, she says she already promised Pamela that they could go hiking together. Maybe you would shrug it off and totally forget about it, or maybe you would feel a sudden burst of disappointment. Why would Amy choose to go hiking with Pamela instead of to the beach with you? You are Amy's wife; Pamela isn't. Why did Amy choose her over you?" Lindsay held back a laugh and offered, "Jeremy, why do you over-analyze everything? If that happened, I would just ask Amy and Pamela if I could go hiking with them. Then afterwards, all three of us would go to the beach!" "You don't understand my point," I told her. "There's nothing to understand," she responded. "I know that you are not the most trustworthy person, Jeremy, but you really need to open up and let others into your life. The only person that you really cared about who ever did anything wrong to you was Victoria. I don't count Pamela, since she was coerced by Cassidy into leaving you. You cannot hide from the rest of humanity because of what one person - Victoria - did to you some nine years ago. You have to realize that people make mistakes." "I just want to be here with you, Lindsay, as well as Devon and Amy," I told her in a heartfelt tone. "I don't even want to run the risk of Pamela and Trish hurting us again. You said it yourself - our life has been perfect. Why do we want to change that? Why do we want to risk it?" "I love Trish!" Lindsay countered, suddenly raising her voice at me. "I always have, and I always will! There I was earlier, crying and hugging her, thinking that maybe - JUST MAYBE - Trish and I could put the pieces back together and build our relationship up again. What Pamela said to you even made Devon cry! And yet, you shock everyone when you say that NO, Pamela and Trish cannot stay with us!" "I did it for us, princess," I told her, now feeling a bit hollow inside. It wasn't all that often that Lindsay displayed such an amount of negative emotion toward me. "Why do we need Pamela and Trish here? We got everything we need. Devon, Amy, Kristanna. That's MORE than I need." "*I* need Trish here!" Lindsay hissed in return. "I love her, Jeremy! I always have, and I always will! She has wronged me in the past, yes, but I forgive her because it was all that horrible Cassidy's fault. Neither Trish or Pamela are out to get us, Jeremy. Why can't you see that?" "Why do you need Trish in your life?" I asked, confused. "You have Devon and Amy. Kristanna too." "I love Trish more than all three of them, combined." "What?" I asked, my eyes wide in shock. "You heard me. I love Trish more than all three of them put together. Well, really Devon and Amy. Kristanna should not count, because she is still new in our lives." "I thought you loved Devon more than you ever did any other woman," I offered, my body feeling as though it was being gutted from the inside out. "Sweetheart, Devon is your wife. She would never hurt you..." "I can't help it," Lindsay quaked, shaking her head as a single tear streaked down her face. "I've always loved Trish. She made me angry and wronged me, as I said, but I have totally forgiven her after today. Totally. Trish was so special to me, Jeremy. More special than you'll ever know. I'm sorry, but Devon does not even compare to Trish in my book." She paused and added, "I want you to tell Trish and Pamela that you changed your mind, and they can stay." "I... I..." "If you love me, Jeremy, you'll let me have Trish back." Oh my God... "You even said yourself," I told her, gulping my throat, "that you did not want them back in our lives. You said that earlier today, Lindsay. But now, you do. Why?" "Because I love Trish, and I want to be with her," she answered. "It's really that simple, Jeremy. I was upset earlier. I did not expect Devon to come bursting into our room, saying that Pamela and Trish are back. It upset me. But after I listened to Pamela and Trish plead their case, everything they did wrong to us, in my book, was forgiven." "Lindsay, this isn't fair," I whispered, shaking my head. "If I love you, I will let you have Trish back? That's not fair at all. You know I love you. But I don't want either of them to stay with us. They're a package deal. If Trish stays, so does Pamela. It's not fair." "Love isn't fair sometimes," the 19-year-old countered, wiping away some excess tears from her eyes. "You don't know how much Trish means to me, Jeremy. You'll never know. You always thought that I loved Devon more than I ever did Trish, but that wasn't the case. I never told you that." "What about Amy?" I asked, feeling more hurt. "We married Amy to be nice to her," Lindsay said, which nearly blew me away. "I love Devon. I love Amy. I love them very, very much. But Trish is my number-one girl." "What about me?" I shrieked, suddenly feeling about two inches tall. "Is Trish more important to you than I am?" "Jeremy..." Lindsay countered, sighing, while shaking her her head. "That's insane. You're the perfect person - man or woman - for me. I love you more than anything." I offered her a begrudging smile and said, "If you love me, Lindsay, you will understand that I don't want either Pamela or Trish here, and you'll give them up." Those words made her angry. "Is that fair?" I quickly interjected, before she had a chance to speak. "Is it fair for me to say that? No, I don't think so. Nor is it fair for you to say that to me." Still very mad, Lindsay shook her head and glared at me. "I want Trish back, Jeremy. It's that simple. I love her more than you'll ever know. You know how much I love Devon. I love Trish a million times more. DON'T take her away from me again! She wants to make everything right." "We don't need them here!" I implored, almost set to cry. "Open your mind," she told me. "Your heart, too. Pamela made a mistake in the past, and she wants to correct it. At least give her a chance, Jeremy. Give Trish the chance to correct her mistake with me, too. It's not much to ask for." "We don't need them here..." "I need Trish," she reiterated, standing up and glaring at me some more. "I'm going to the room that her and Pamela are staying in for the night. You have them booked on a flight back to Toronto tomorrow morning, Jeremy. I want you to cancel their reservations. I want you to let them stay." "I can't..." "IF you love me, and want to make me happy, you will." "Lindsay..." I cried, covering my eyes with both hands. "You heard me," she warned, her voice flat. "I'll be in their room with them. I hope to see you there with some good news for us before the hour is up." With those words, Lindsay gave me one more spiteful look before turning around and exiting our private suite. Of course, all I could do in response was cover my eyes and cry once again. * * * I could not believe it. Lindsay - my darling, precious bride, who could do no wrong in my eyes - had given me an ultimatum. My viewpoint on Pamela and Trish had not changed one bit since they made their initial return to the island this past summer. I understood that they were blackmailed by Cassidy into leaving us last December. I also understood that they had every intention of atoning for their past mistakes. Still, nothing was more important to me than my marriage with Lindsay, Devon and Amy. Nothing at all. I did not miss Pamela the same way that she obviously missed me. I was perfectly happy with the way my life was now. Why even run the risk - no matter how small it is - of Pamela and Trish interfering with our marriage? They seemingly meant well, but I was still under the firm belief that even their mere presence here would have no positive effect on our marriage. If anything, it would have a negative effect. I was sure of it. It certainly does not make sense for a man to have his ex-wife frisking around with his current wife - or in my case, his three wives. Does it? I also understood, though I was still quite surprised by it, that Lindsay's feelings for Trish ran a lot deeper than I originally thought. Her love for Trish was "a million times" stronger than it was for Devon? That hurt me. All along, I had thought that Lindsay and Devon were the perfect couple in terms of two females. They were always smiling and happy together. True, Lindsay was the same way with Trish last year. But still, the thought never once crossed my mind that she loved Trish more than she did Devon. Perhaps in wanting Lindsay to love Devon more than Trish, I had actually tricked myself into believing that was the case. I looked at this from the standpoint that Pamela and Trish had hurt both Lindsay and I in the past. No matter if they were coerced or not, what was to stop them from doing it to us again? Didn't Lindsay understand that? Why did she want to take the chance of going through all that pain again? Someone could hold a gun to my head and tell me to say nasty things to Lindsay, Devon and/or Amy, and I would not do it. I rather take the bullet and die than hurt their feelings the same way that Pamela and Trish had done to us. Of course, that is just me, and I realize that everyone is different. Pamela and Trish were very different, obviously. But the comment that Lindsay made to me which hurt more than anything else - above her words for Devon, as well as her ultimatum - was that we married Amy "to be nice to her". Down deep, what did that say about Lindsay's true feelings for Amy? Was Amy just an extra luxury in life to her? Was Amy just someone for her to have sex with? I may focus more of my daily attention upon Lindsay and Devon, but make no mistake about it - I loved Amy very, VERY much. I would have never married her if it wasn't the case. Why was Lindsay saying these things to me? Of course, her ultimatum really stung me as well, though not quite as much as that quote about Amy. If I loved her, I would allow Trish (as well as Pamela) to stay. But what if I put my foot down, and held firm? What if I told Lindsay that Pamela and Trish were leaving, and it was final? I gulped my throat at the possible ramifications. Ever since Pamela left me last December, Lindsay had been the absolute center of my life. Every regarding me had revolved around her. I would do anything to make her happy. Anything at all. If I loved her, she said, I would allow Trish (and Pamela) to stay here on the island with us. Did I love Lindsay? Of course I did. Did I want to make her happy? Without a doubt. Would I do anything at all to make her happy? Absolutely. Even at the expense of my own feelings? Yes... Taking a deep breath, I shook my head and wiped my teary eyes with a Kleenex tissue. It was time to go to the room that Pamela and Trish were sharing for the night, and tell them that they did not have to board that flight for Canada tomorrow after all. I changed my mind - they could stay. * * * As I took another deep breath and rose up from the bed, the door to the suite I shared with my trio of wives opened up. For an instant, I prayed that it was Lindsay - wanting to recant her demands. Instead, it was Devon. Remembering what Lindsay had said about Devon - her love for Trish was "a million times" stronger, I gulped my throat and suddenly found my legs moving. I ran over to Devon and embraced her tightly, trying my absolute best to hold back a new flow of tears. Devon was an absolute angel to me. "What's this for?" she squealed, obviously unaware of my prior discussion with Lindsay. Devon pulled back from my arms and looked into my face, studying it, as I did my best to hold my emotions in check. "Is everything okay?" "I love you, Devon," I said, wrapping my arms around her once again, and hugging her fiercely. "You know that, don't you? I love you so much. I want you to know that." "Of course I know that," the 25-year-old countered, pulling back from my embrace. "What's wrong, Jeremy? You look like a freight train just hit you." "We'll talk about it later," I told her. "I just want you to know that I love you. You mean so much to me. I can't live without you. I don't want to live without you." "What's wrong?" she asked, now on the defensive. "Why are you acting like this, Jeremy?" I tried to collect my thoughts while telling her, "All I want right now is for you to know that, and understand it. I love you, Devon. Please realize that. We'll... we'll talk about it later, I promise you. Hopefully." I did not allow Devon to respond to my words as I slipped away from her and literally sprinted down the long corridor which led to the central part of the mansion. Then, I made a dash toward the hallway where the string of guest bedrooms were located. In room two, I found Pamela and Trish seated on the bed, but there was no Lindsay. In a move that surprised me, Pamela immediately got up, made her way over to me and tossed both arms around my shoulders in a joyous embrace. "Thank you, Jeremy!" she exclaimed, her voice full of happiness. "Thank you, thank you, thank you! You're giving us another chance!" Stunned, I withdrew myself from Pamela's adoring arms and stared blankly at her. "Huh?" How did they know that I was going to let them stay on the island after all? "Lindsay gave us the good news!" Trish chirped, which caused my eyes to widen in disbelief. "She was here just a minute ago. Lindsay said you changed your mind, Jeremy. I'm in agreement with Pamela - thank you! We won't interfere in your marriage. We just want to fit in." "Lindsay told you that I changed my mind?" I confirmed, a sudden (but concealed) rage of anger boiling within myself. "She said you thought about it, and changed your mind," Pamela smiled, obviously happier than she had been in months. "I was hoping that you would give it a second thought." "Can you tell me where Lindsay is?" I asked, my voice low and controlled. "I need to talk to her about something." "Oh, Lindsay went to the kitchen to get us some drinks," Trish answered. "She left 60 seconds before you showed up." "Thank you," I told her, before turning and exiting the guest suite in a silent rage. * * * For the first time in my life, I was EXTREMELY angry at Lindsay. I had a DAMN GOOD REASON to be mad at her, too. How could she tell Pamela and Trish that I had changed my mind, and was going to allow them to stay? I may act like a loyal puppy to Lindsay, but she certainly had NO RIGHT to make up my mind for me - let alone, speak it for me, too. I could not believe her audacity. Why did she do that? It was totally out of character for her. * * * Seething with anger, I stormed off to the kitchen to confront my young wife, but she was nowhere to be found. I glanced back out in the front room, which was adjacent to the kitchen, but she wasn't there, either. I gave a quick look outside, but there was no sign of her. Where had Lindsay gone off to? She certainly was not with Pamela and Trish, since I had just come from their guest suite. I went out to the main room and looked in all directions, took a guess, and went to the south corridor. I wandered around for awhile, but eventually made my way back to the front room and tried a different corridor. This time, I had hit the jackpot. Well, sort of... "I heard what you said about me," Devon quipped, her voice coming from somewhere ahead. "That doesn't bother me. What does bother me is what you said to Jeremy. I was just in our room, and he looked like he was going to cry. I went into the voyeur room to review the tapes, and see what got him so upset. How can you say what you did to Jeremy?" "Because it's the truth," I heard Lindsay say, her tone defiant. "I don't want to lose Trish again." "How can you threaten him like that?" Devon asked, as I slowly stepped closer toward them. Their argument was ensuing from the foyer, which was 20 feet in front of me. "If Jeremy loves you? Jeremy does love you, Lindsay, but what you said was totally over the line." "I don't think so," the 19-year-old retorted. "I don't think there is anything wrong with speaking up, and saying how you feel. I gave up everything - all my friends and family back home - to stay with Jeremy, on this island. I gave up EVERYTHING. I don't think it is too much of me to ask Jeremy to give up something in return for me." "Perhaps not, but you shouldn't have threatened him!" Devon snapped. "Pamela and Trish are harmless," Lindsay told her. "I don't know why Jeremy cannot see that. Maybe he refuses to see it. Whatever the case, Trish was the first person that I ever loved. She was ripped away from me through no fault of her own. I want her back. I want her to stay with us." "You should have said it like that, then!" Devon huffed. "You SHOULD NOT have made a threat to Jeremy like you did! My God, Lindsay... Jeremy has given us EVERYTHING. Look at this mansion; look at the island. It's a paradise! Look at all the vacations and trips we go on. He showers all of us with constant presents and gifts. You'll never find a better life than this - I guarantee you! NEVER! Jeremy is SO GOOD to us. Yet, you DEMAND more of him. That's not right!" "You don't know how important Trish is to me," Lindsay countered, her voice tented with anger. "I was in Trish's arms when you were still in Pennsylvania, Devon - long before you even STEPPED FOOT on this island. You have NO IDEA how much Trish and I were in love together this time last year. ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA." "More than you love me," Devon sighed. "Yes," Lindsay confirmed. "You seem to have accepted the fact that Jeremy loves me more than he loves you. You have even told him that it is okay he feels that way. Get used to the feeling. I love Trish with all of my heart. I love her ALMOST as much as I love Jeremy. I don't want her taken away from me again. It won't happen." "You went about this all the wrong way," Devon told her. "You shouldn't have threatened Jeremy. He's too good to us. You should not have backed him into a corner, and demanded that he let Pamela and Trish stay here. It's not right." "Why not?" Lindsay countered. "I let Jeremy back ME into a corner - allowing both you and Amy into our marriage." "How can you say that to me?" Devon suddenly cried, as Lindsay's hateful words sent a dagger through my heart. SLAP! My eyes nearly exploded as I heard the unmistakable noise of an open hand making brutal contact with another person's face. The question is, since I could not see either Devon or Lindsay... who slapped who? "I THOUGHT YOU LOVED ME!" Devon exploded, full of anger. <<<- End of Part 6 ->>> ==---- -- -- -- - --- -- -- - - --- -- -- --- -- - - - - --- -- ----== Find every chapter of this story updated and archived at: http://www.asstr-mirror.org/files/Authors/HighlanderJM/ Reader feedback (HighlanderJM@hotmail.com) is appreciated! ---> Chat with me on MSN Messenger : HighlanderJM@hotmail.com <1st attachment end> ----- ASSM Moderation System Notice------ Notice: This post has been modified from its original format.
