It was dusk. Insects began to rise from the untamed grass that lined the pathway. To my left a boisterous chocolate lab played fetch with an young couple. I passed a park bench where an elderly man and woman sat. Their cracked-paper fingers were entwined. Another couple carried a cooler and picnic blanket. Yet another lay on a plaid blanket looking up at the sky. I looked up at the sky. The purple remains of the sun were behind me, the first twinkling stars ahead. I looked down at my feet. I walked further. On another park bench sat a girl. I stopped. I sat down beside her. We sat, looking across the green field towards the dark woods. I cleared my throat. She startled slightly. "You come here often?" I asked. "Sometimes." She said without looking at me. Her face was young. Mouth open. Hair tangled and knotted like seaweed. The noble curve of her nose smudged with dirt. Her feet were pulled up onto the bench. Her knees against her chest. Between the two a small book. "Do you write?" I asked. "Sometimes." She said without looking at me. We sat. Not moving, as crickets began chirping. The air began to cool. More people left the park. Left for the security of their homes and their beds. Still the girl and I sat, waiting. "Do you have a name?" I asked. "Ophelia." She said without looking at me. "A tragic name." I observed. "Yes." She said, looking at me for the first time. "Do you like to walk?" I asked. "Sometimes." She said, looking away again. "Come with me. I can show you something." I said as I stood. She looked up at me. I held out my hand. I smiled. She held out her small hand and I took it in mine. I led her across the green field towards the dark woods. Several fireflies lit the way. When we reached the edge of the dark woods she dug her heels in. "You are right to be afraid. There are many wolves in these woods, and they often eat small girls. But the wolves know me and they won't bother us. You'll like what I can show you." Her blue eyes were wide, looking up at me. I smiled. She followed me into the wood. We walked for a long time. Dead branches cracked beneath our feet. Still we walked through the woods. An owl called out from the branches. Still we walked. "It's just through here." The dark woods broke before us. There was a small pond. We approached its bank. Several frogs leapt from their grassy perches over the smooth water. The ripples gently made their way to the opposite bank. Ophelia watched gold fish floating in the depths. I watched her reflection in the murky waters. "Do you like it?" I asked. She answered only with the nodding of her head. I smiled. A frog's head appeared between two nearby lily pads. She reached for it and it ducked back under the water. I had to hold her so she wouldn't fall in. "Have you runaway from home?" I asked. "Yes." She replied. I sat down on the wet earth. I put her on my lap. She looked at me. Her eyes wide again. Her mouth open again. In the growing darkness the freckles on her face blended together and vanished. "Why did you run away?" I asked. "Mommy's boyfriend is mean to me." She replied. I sighed and held her. Her body was tense, but I held her still. Soon the tension began to leave. She convulsed slightly, steamy tears wetting my overcoat. I held her. In the morning I dropped her on the steps of the police department. *** Two years ago, I took a walk in the park. It was dusk. Again insects rose from the grass. Another couple played fetch with another chocolate lab. An elderly woman sat alone on a park bench. A group of three, wearing head bands, jogged past. I looked up at the sky. The stars were rising ahead of me once again and the purple remnants of the sun sagged in the sky behind me. On another park bench sat a young woman. I stopped. I sat down beside her. We sat, looking across the green field towards the dark woods. I cleared my throat. "Come here often?" I asked. "What's it to ya?" She replied. Her face was still young. Mouth pressed shut. Hair tangled and in exaggerated curls. Her raccoon like eyes smudged with mascara. In her bright pink purse I could see a book. "Do you write?" I asked. "None of your business." She replied without looking at me. We sat. Not moving, as crickets began to chirp once more. The air was cool and people began to leave the park. Leaving for their warm beds and babbling television sets. Still the girl and I sat. "Do you have a name?" I asked. "Look, pops, I'm not in the mood for twenty questions." She replied. She got up to leave. "Don't go. I can pay you." I said. "Twenty-five for a blow, fifty for a fuck." She replied. "Come with me." I said. "I know where we can have some privacy." "I don't care about privacy." She replied. "It's not far." I said. I offered her my hand. I smiled. She refused my hand but followed me anyway. We walked across the green field. We entered the dark woods and she followed me without hesitation. We walked and we walked. Finally we came to the pond with the frogs and the gold fish. She briefly looked in the water. Then she looked back at me. "Alright, what'll it be, pops?" She asked. I didn't say anything. I took off my overcoat and spread it delicately over the wet earth. I sat down and looked up at the stars. I motioned for her to join me. She sat down. I looked at her. The silhouette of her face against the dark woods. She began removing her clothing. Her breasts were small. Her nipples puffy. I took off my shirt and undershirt. She removed her miniskirt and helped me with my pants and underwear. I laid on my back. I looked at the stars. I looked at her hair falling around me. Her nipples brushing against my chest. Her wet velvet embracing my member. Her hands pressing down on my shoulders. I watched a shooting star and felt myself come inside her. I emptied my wallet. I fell asleep. In the morning she was gone. *** One month later I took a walk in the park. Again it was dusk. Again I found the young woman sitting on the same park bench. I sat down beside her. "Do you come here often?" She asked. "Sometimes." I replied without looking at her. "Do you have more money for me?" She asked. "Yes." I replied. She got up. She offered me her hand. She smiled. I took her hand and she led me across the green field. We entered the dark woods together. We found the small pond together. The frogs splashed into the murky waters as we approached. The gold fish swam below the surface as before. "Do you have a name?" She asked. "Hamlet." I replied. "A tragic name." She observed. "Yes." I replied. She took my overcoat. She spread it gently over the wet earth and sat down. I looked down at her. Her blue eyes. She motioned for me to sit. I did. I began to remove my clothes. First my shirt. She watched. Once my chest was bare she began to remove her shirt. I took off my pants and underwear. I helped her with her miniskirt. She laid below me. Her tangled hair spread out around her. My hands held her arms down. I entered her slowly. She wrapped her legs around me. She looked up at me with wide eyes. Wide blue eyes, like before. I pressed against her, in her. She pressed back. We came together. I emptied my wallet once again. I fell asleep beside her. In the morning she was gone. *** Several weeks later, I took a walk in the park. It was dusk. The air was cool. Fall was near. Less people came to the park. I walked until I came to the empty park bench. I sat down. I waited. Hours passed but I still sat. Still I waited. I looked up at the sky. The stars twinkled down at me. The moon was high. I got up. I walked across the green field. I entered the dark wood. I came to the little pond. Fewer frogs jumped into its waters as I approached. On the wet earth was her pink purse. Its contents strewn about the ground. Lipstick. Condoms. Subway tokens. An emptied wallet. A small book. I sat down on the wet earth. I looked into the pond. Gold fish swam through Ophelia's tangled hair. Her blood clouded the murky waters. I put my head in my hands. I wept. I looked up at the sky and questioned the stars. I picked up the small book. I read about her life. I smiled. I cried. I fell asleep. In the morning I left her there. *** The End.
