Though relatively little else is known, Cleland began his adult life by enlisting with the East India Company, like some other British author-adventurers such as Sir Richard Francis Burton. Though he would enjoy a successful career in Asia, he ultimately returned to England to attempt a living as an author. He did not meet with success, and soon found himself in debtor's prison. It was there that he completed the final version of "Fanny Hill" between 1748 and 1749. Upon its publication, attempts were made to imprison both Cleland and the publisher for obscenity. They were ultimately fined 100, a significant sum equivalent to several thousand dollars today. Considering that the two parts of "Fanny Hill" sold for three shillings each (thirty-six pence, or 15% of a pound), it is unlikely that Cleland netted any great profits from his work. The book tells the story of Frances Hill, a young English country girl, who comes to London to "seek her fortune" after her parents die of smallpox. Frances, or Fanny, as she calls herself, is scarcely fifteen when the story opens. Alone in London without friends or resources, she is picked up by a woman named Mrs. Brown, who purports to be hiring Fanny as a maid. Mrs. Brown is in fact the proprietress of a brothel, and she intends to add Fanny to her stable of girls. Fanny's adventures as a kept mistress and London prostitute form the basis for the story. Written as it is in mid-18th Century vernacular, "Fanny Hill" is not an especially easy read. The text is long on exposition and very short on dialogue, with sentences that run on for a hundred words or more, often larded with flowery descriptions and archaic terminology. Nevertheless, Fanny's arch and satirical view of her life can still hold the reader's attention two and a half centuries later. As a work of literature, "Fanny Hill" is relatively straightforward-no great depth hides within its pages. The plot, in general, exists primarily to carry Fanny from one encounter to the next, and the descriptions of these encounters run on far longer than the glue that holds them together. Yet "Fanny Hill" is no simple stroke story. It has a meaning and message, but they are grounded in the conventions of 18th Century British literature, with which the average reader may not be familiar. Although it would be nearly a century before Queen Victoria ascended the throne, the stuffy moral hypocrisy that characterized her reign existed long beforehand. In the popular novels of that day, from authors such as Sir Walter Scott and Daniel Defoe, one tends to find a strong-often pedantic-moral tone. Characters of good moral fiber succeed even against great odds; those with moral deficiencies ultimately fail, no matter how sympathetic their plights may be. British society, at least on the surface, expected this pattern. Anything else was considered scandalous, and it appears again and again throughout the literature of this period. In "Fanny Hill," however, Fanny's moral failings do nothing to impede her progress through the world. If anything, they propel her forward. She makes no excuses for who she is and revels in her debauchery. The contrast between "Fanny Hill" and some of Scott's novels ("The Heart of Midlothian" and its pious heroine come immediately to mind) is so great that Cleland undoubtedly intended to satirize such works. The satire is all the more effective because "Fanny Hill" is a relatively faithful depiction of "women of pleasure" during that era. The sex industry of London sucked up girls like Fanny in droves. Their customers were often precisely the pillars of society who denounced Cleland's book when it was published, even as they exploited the real-life Fanny Hills in private. In adapting this work for the modern reader, I attempted to remain true to the spirit of Cleland's text rather than the precise form. I was forced to make a number of concessions to the setting I chose: late-20th Century Los Angeles. Much of the first part of the original involves Fanny's discovery of her sexuality, and I did not feel that the na ve country girl she begins the book as translated very well to modern America. These days, fifteen-year-old girls, even those coming straight from the farm, are far more aware of the fundamentals of sex than Fanny was. I also had some difficulty with the romantic portrayal of prostitution that Cleland employed (remember that "Fanny Hill" takes place in the days before antibiotics), and that dictated a few adjustments in the setting. I did give some thought to an attempt to ape Cleland's writing style while setting the story in modern America (similar to the most recent film version of "Romeo and Juliet," which used Shakespeare's script in a modern setting), but ultimately discarded the idea as strained and unrealistic. Who can imagine a fifteen-year-old girl in 1999 saying something like, "The greatest men, those of the first and most leading taste, will not scruple adorning their private closets with nudities, though, in compliance with vulgar prejudices, they may not think them decent decorations of the staircase, or salon." Not exactly a line right out of "Dawson's Creek." Another change I made was in Cleland's framing device. Fanny's story is presented as a pair of long letters to a woman whose identity is never revealed. I considered preserving that form, but decided that it wasn't very realistic either. Who has time these days to draft a forty-page letter? A bit of thought gave me a better idea, and I think you will find it very appropriate. For all these changes, however, Cleland's underlying message still has relevance. There is no shortage of moral hypocrisy in modern America, and one has only to look to the nation's capitol for confirmation of that fact. It is to that theme, and not to the details of Fanny's life, that I have tried to adhere. One final note for the nit-pickers amongst you: "Fanny Hill" has long since passed into the public domain, so I am not infringing on anyone's copyright with this adaptation. --- FANNY HILL, or MEMOIRS OF A WOMAN OF PLEASURE Copyright 1999 by MichaelD38@aol.com Based on "Fanny Hill, or, Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure" by John Cleland, 1749 Subject: Fanny Hill, or, Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure (ff, mf, teen, rom, spanking, true) Path: lobby01.news.aol.com!newstf02.news.aol.com!portc01.blue.aol.com!news-peer. gip.net!news.gsl.net!gip.net!cyclone.news.idirect.com!island.idirect.com!n ewsfeed1.earthlink.net!news.alt.net!qz!not-for-mail From: FannyHill@hotmail.com Newsgroups: alt.sex.stories.moderated,alt.sex.stories Followup-To: alt.sex.stories.d Date: 18 Jan 1999 09:27:09 GMT Organization: The Committee To Thwart Spam Lines: 17980 Approved: Message-ID: <16776eli$9810010527@qz.little-neck.ny.us> X-Archived-At: X-Moderator-Contact: Eli the Bearded X-Story-Submission: X-Original-Message-ID: <6usv11$u31$1@nnrp1.dejanews.com> Part One. Okay, I know what you're thinking, "true story," yeah, right. Here comes another one of those "true confessions" of some teenage slut, probably written by some middle-aged man who thinks he understands women when he hasn't gotten laid in years. I know truth is relative, and no more so than around here. I mean, I could claim to be Jenny McCarthy or Pamela Anderson and you'd never really know-not for certain, right?-whether I was lying. Sure, it's damned unlikely, but who's to say what's true or not? So believe what you want. But all of this is true. I'm only writing this because someone asked me to, since this is basically a lot of ancient history, and some of it isn't too pretty. After you climb out of the gutter, you don't spend a lot of time staring back down into it, right? Even if doing so does give you some perspective. So-here goes. I grew up in a trailer park outside of Des Moines, Iowa. My given name was Frances Hill, and don't start giving me shit about it, okay? Frances was my grandmother's name, about the only one of my relatives I didn't hate. Everyone called me Fanny anyway, which wasn't much of an improvement. "Nice fanny, Fanny." "How's the fanny, Fanny?" I've already heard every cute remark you can make out of my name, so save your breath. Anyway, my dad, when he actually worked-which wasn't often-was an auto mechanic. Sometimes he'd work in a garage, other times he'd just fix people's cars in our front yard. Or he'd pick up some junker somewhere, fix it up, and try to sell it. When he was sober-which wasn't often either-he could make enough to keep my mom and me fed. When he wasn't, my mom would babysit other kids around the trailer park, which meant I grew up helping her take care of a succession of other people's brats. By the time I was fifteen, I had had about enough of both of them, and I was starting to think about taking off and going somewhere else, although I had no idea about where to go. I had one decent friend at school, this girl named Esther Davis (don't ask me what it is about girl's names in Iowa). She and I hung around the trailer park together, flirting with the boys and stealing beer out of dad's ice chest. (Is the term "trailer trash" springing to mind? Then I'm getting this across to you clearly enough.) Esther's folks were divorced, and her dad lived out in L.A. She went to visit him now and then, and whenever she came back, she'd tell me all of these stories about Hollywood and Malibu and the movie stars and all of this other stuff I'd never seen except on TV. We talked a lot about becoming actresses or models ourselves, and Esther kept telling me how I was pretty enough to do it if I could just get out there. One night, we were sitting on the steps of our trailer drinking dad's beer (he was passed out shit-faced in front of the TV) and talking about California. Then Esther just goes: "We should go out there. You and me." "What, to L.A.? How?" "Just take the bus. We could stay with my dad and get jobs or something. We'd work at night and audition for parts during the day. That's what people do." "We can't just take off." "Why not? If you stick around here, you'll just get pregnant and end up living in a trailer park married to some guy like your dad." "Your dad would let us do that?" "If bet if we showed up, he'd let us. It's not like he could just kick us out on the street." Being fifteen and sick of living in trailer parks, that was about all it took for me. Somehow we scrounged together enough money for bus tickets (I stole most of mine from my mom), and hopped on the bus without saying good bye. Three days later we were in California. --- OUTLINE Coming to LA Picked up by martha brown, adult film director Taken to brown's house Mislead about her position Seduced by phoebe, adult film actress Botched attempt to film fanny's loss of virginity, she gets sick and producer gets busted for coke Witnesses mrs brown and her lover, masturbates Discovers polly and her lover filming sex scene, watchers with phoebe Meets Charles, rich kid, and runs off with him (men chase virginity only to destroy it) Kept by charles for about a year, gets pregnant (now 16) Charles's father sends him away on family business, fanny has a fit and miscarries Taken up by Mr. H., rich guy, as his mistress Discovers H. with another girl, fires her Seduces Jesus the house-boy, decides she likes him better Discovered by H., he kicks her out (now about 17) Goes into house of Mrs. Cole, a dungeon/outcall service Party where girls discuss losing virginity Emily: hitchhiker Harriet: raped Louisa: growing up too fast Orgy follows Brief period with son of famous actor Attracts Mr. Norbert, rich old libertine who thinks she's a virgin (again) Kept by Norbert for a few months, who then dies Meets Mr. Barville, who likes being whipped, she whips him, he whips her Emily goes to party and man thinks she's a boy Fanny and Louise seduce the pool boy, who has an enormous penis Mrs. Cole starts a live sex web site Emily goes home to her parents Mrs. Cole retires and Fanny goes off on her own Meets another old man, who takes her in, dies, and leaves her all his money (now about 18) Goes on a vacation and runs into Charles They marry and live happily ever after --- --- THE END Michael ~Story Archives~ www.asstr-mirror.org/files/Authors/MichaelD/www/ www.asstr-mirror.org/files/Authors/Richard_Bissell/www ~Other Archives~ www.storiesonline.net www.asstr-mirror.org/files/Authors/BitBard/www/forray/michaeld/ -- Pursuant to the Berne Convention, this work is copyright with all rights reserved by its author unless explicitly indicated. +---------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | alt.sex.stories.moderated ----- send stories to: | | FAQ: Moderator: | +---------------------------------------------------------------------------+ |Archive: Hosted by Alt.Sex.Stories Text Repository | |, an entity supported entirely by donations. | +---------------------------------------------------------------------------+
