The next few weeks were hectic. Jenny was working

shook my head "I called Derek and asked him if he 
knew of any of his friends that might have access 
to a hall or other place we could book for

I'll go and ring Derek and tell him yes, just so 
long as I'm not going to lose my job by doing it." 
"Don't be so mean Jack" said Jenny "We've enough 
money between us that we don't need to work full 
time anyway, I'm sure Ted will keep it open for 
you, after all you've done a lot for them, I don't 
see why they can't do something for you this time." 
I called Derek and said I was prepared to consider 
taking the job on. "Right Jack, don't go anywhere I 
need to make a couple of calls. I'll call you back 
in a short while" with that he hung up on me and I 
went back to finish my breakfast with the family. 
In less that half an hour Derek called back and 
asked me to meet him as soon as I could at his 
house, and to bring Jenny with me, if she wasn't 
doing anything special. Just before he hung up 
again he said "Is 'Trish still with you Jack, if so 
why not all of you come, Doreen would be glad of 
the company while we talk business." It was some 
time before we set out for Derek's home, the girls 
all had to get dressed up, Jenny making me put on 
my suit rather than the sweats I intended to wear. 
Eventually we arrived and were met at the door by 
Derek and Doreen, Derek whisking me away to his 
study while Doreen took the girls to do their own 
thing. When I stepped into Derek's study I stopped 
dead! Large though it was the room was almost 
filled with people, among them was Dave, Bill 
Hamilton, the Mayor and a number of members of the 
city council. Also there were a number of the legal 
types I met at 'that' party when I gave Mary such a 
hard time. As I looked around I saw Mary and 
returned her smile, despite feeling I had been set 
up and was suddenly very nervous. At Derek's 
insistence I sat on the chair beside him and 
listened to him say "Ladies and Gentlemen, I'm glad 
to say that Jack has agreed to take the position I 
was instructed to offer him, on the understanding 
he will still have secure employment in his current 
position. He's one of those people that actually 
enjoys the work he does, besides being damned good 
at it." Ted stood up and said firmly "Jack, I 
promise you, in front of these witnesses that your 
job will always be waiting for you, although we 
don't anticipate you being away more than three 
days a week. I will make sure you have the 
resources to continue in your present position, 
even in your occasional absence." As he sat down I 
smiled at Ted and said "That's good enough for me 
Ted, in that case Derek, I'm prepared to sit down 
and discuss what this thing is all about." The 
Mayor stood up, and without any of the bluster of 
our previous meeting started speaking, "Jack, when 
I agreed to allow you to set up and run the car 
club last year, I did it having no expectation of 
you succeeding, no matter how much money we threw 
at the project. You, or more properly, the young 
people you recruited, proved me wrong, very wrong. 
It seems that the actual amount of public money 
expended on that club has totalled, over the past 
year, no less than five thousand dollars, that's just 
five percent of the amount you started with. I'm 
told it will cost a little more during the second 
year, but not much more. Not only have you shown 
what young people can do, you did it without making 
a large amount of fuss. You did it even though 
there were people that went to great lengths to 
discredit you and your family, although I'm 
informed you handled that threat quite 
convincingly." This brought a ripple of laughter 
from around the room, as most of those present knew 
what had actually happened. "The thing is Jack" 
continued the Mayor, "Many people are now beginning 
to think you might have a point with what you say 
about young people needing the trust of our 
generation in order to show what they can do. To 
that end it is proposed to set up a commission, 
headed by you, to oversee any and all youth 
orientated organisations, and try to get them to 
work together, in a co-ordinated manner, for the 
benefit of the young people of this city." He 
paused for a moment then said "I'll let Derek tell 
you a little more about it" then sat down again. 
Derek stood up and said "Basically Jack, you'll 
have a reasonable budget, as much help as you need 
in respect of logistics and personnel, and the 
complete backing of the city council as well as a 
good proportion of the local press. The thing is 
Jack, will you take on the job?" I looked around 
the room, grinned and said "Well, considering the 
pressure I'm under from my family, I don't see how 
I could possible say no. Even if it's just to 
ensure a peaceful home life." A huge sigh issued 
from their collective lungs and Derek stood up, 
smiled at me and said "Thanks Jack, we really do 
appreciate it. There's just a couple of things I 
didn't mention and that is that your budget is to 
me a quarter of a million a year, and you salary 
will be sixty thousand, seeing as you will only be 
working part time." I sat there stunned! When I did 
get my breath back I said to Derek "I thought I was 
doing it for nothing like I did with the car club. 
No one said anything about being paid, let alone 
getting paid so much." Mary stood up and said, with 
a smile, "Jack, some of us thought you'd say no if 
you knew the job carried a salary like that. That's 
the reason it wasn't mentioned until after you 
accepted the position. It just goes to show we were 
right to pick you to do it, most other people would 
have asked 'how much', you just said 'I'll do it'." 
The Mayor stood up again "Jack, please don't even 
think of refusing the salary, it would make it very 
awkward for our auditors to explain why we had such 
a large amount of money floating around without a 
home. We really think you're worth every penny 
we're paying you, which by the way starts from this 
morning. Now, I must go, I have to arrange a press 
conference for first thing tomorrow, will nine 
thirty be OK for you?" I nodded, still speechless, 
and shook his hand as he left, as I did with many 
of those present who also left at the same time. 
All that stayed were Bill, Dave, Mary and Derek, 
and we were just about to leave the study when 
Doreen brought Jenny and Trish and the girls in. 
Doreen had obviously told Jenny what was on offer 
and it was obvious that I had accepted the job 
because she threw herself at me and hugged me as 
soon as she saw me. Despite the fact it was still 
morning Derek broke out a bottle of Champagne and 
we all celebrated, after a number of toasts had 
been proposed, congratulating me. As he was leaving 
Bill shook my hand and said softly "It's nice to 
see a good guy win for a change Jack, keep it up, 
and remember I'm always ready to help out if you 
need it. By the way Mark is proving to be the best 
young man I've ever recruited, even though he's the 
youngest to be put in his current post. I reckon 
he's got a real good future with us, if we can keep 
him." "I'm glad of that Bill, I know Jerry thinks a 
lot of John as well. It's nice to see your faith 
justified." When Ted left he asked me to see him as 
soon as I was finished with the press conference, 
"We need to talk about getting you a deputy Jack, 
think on it will you please?" I agreed to do so and 
let him know my thoughts the next day. 
As I sat down with Derek he grinned at me, "Sorry 
about all that Jack, especially the thing about the 
money that went with the job. Some of them wanted 
to tell you what it was before you had a chance to 
say yes or no. The majority won and it was decided 
to let you accept without taking the cash into 
consideration. One or two said you'd turn it down, 
thinking it was to be done for free, I bet the 
Mayor twenty bucks you'd say yes, then complain 
about the size of the salary. I must remember to 
collect from him next time I see him." We spent the 
next hour talking about how I was to set up the 
staffing, where my offices would be and discussed a 
general outline of what I would be saying at the 
press conference in the morning. Doreen came and 
told us it was lunch time and we had to come 
immediately. We did so and I was soon under siege 
again as the girls all wanted to know what I was 
actually going to be doing. Seeing as I didn't have 
a clue I said "I guess I need someone like you two 
to tell me the sort of things young people want, 
rather than what we want you to have. Do you know 
anyone with a modicum of sense that would be 
prepared to talk to me about it?" 
Sue raised a laugh when she replied "Oh, don't be 
so silly Daddy, Frankie and I could get a hundred 
girls to come and talk to you, most of them have 
already asked me if they can come to our next party 
so they can get to know you." "That's a good idea 
Jack" said Derek, "Go out on a couple of dates with 
some young girls, I might even join you in your 
research." "Over my dead body" said Doreen firmly 
"You must be crazy if you think I'm going to let 
you loose among a crowd of nubile young women, your 
heart won't stand it and I don't want to be left on 
my own just yet, thank you." We all sat round for 
another hour bouncing ideas off one another then 
Jenny made our excuses and we left, still unable to 
grasp completely what had actually happened during 
the morning. Monday was hectic, I spent two hours 
with the Mayor talking about how I was going to 
tackle the problems I was sure to find. I then 
spent half an hour fielding questions from the 
press some of which had little to do with the job, 
more to do with what I was going to be getting out 
of it. One reporter from a paper less than 
favourably disposed towards me since the Avenging 
Angels episodes asked me how much I was being paid, 
"Probable less than you" I replied "And I'd 
hope to more good than you do at the same time." 
This got a laugh from most of the rest, and a scowl 
from him. When I was finished with the 'gentlemen' 
of the press I went to work to see about sorting 
out the problems Ted was going to have in the near 
future. I'd had an idea as to whom I wanted to 
deputise for me, he was one of those passed over 
when I got promoted. Andy was a good worker, and 
had supported me in all the changes I made when I 
took over. As well as being a good administrator he 
also knew his job and was slow but very accurate, 
his work usually needing less working over than 
most of the others. Ted agreed with me, I went and 
fetched Andy quietly and we sat in Ted's office for 
quite a while as Ted explained what we wanted Andy 
to do. "Basically Andy" said Ted "Jack will be out 
of the office for most of the week, at least three 
days in fact. That means we need someone to fill in 
for him at meetings he can't attend. You'd report 
what went on, what decisions were made, and also 
give reports to the meetings, in fact everything 
Jack normally does, including running the 
department while he's not there. Interested?" 
"Definitely Ted" said Andy, "Can I ask what Jack 
will be doing that makes this necessary?" Ted 
looked at me, I gave a nod and Ted said "Why not? 
Jack will be heading the new Youth Commission 
that's just been announced by the Mayor. That means 
he won't be working here full time for the 
foreseeable future, which means your new position 
will be there for quite a long time. Still 
interested Andy?" "Yes Ted" Andy replied. I spent 
the rest of the day taking Andy through all the 
things he would need to get to grips with. I would 
still be attending some meetings with Andy beside 
me, but most of the day to day running would be 
done by him. Tuesday I was at City Hall meeting 
with those people that would be available for 
secondment to my commission from their existing 
staff. I took one from personnel, and one from 
secretarial services, asking for my neighbor Joe 
Ward to act as accounting support. All three 
accepted the posts offered especially as they had 
security of employment at such time as they wanted 
to return to their old job, or the Commission 
ceased to function. I suggested to the Mayor that 
it would be logical to have Joe do the same sort of 
job for any new ventures as he was already doing 
for the car club, oversee the club accounts and 
teach the members how to run their finances 
correctly. This was agreed and I soon had Joe and 
the others sitting in my new offices talking about 
what we would be doing and how. The basics were 
soon set into place and on Wednesday when I was 
sitting with the family at dinner I said "Sue 
darling, how would you like me to take you and 
Frankie out for the evening?" "Ohhh... yes please 
Daddy, where are we going, to the movies?" I smiled 
and shook my head "No, I thought it might be nice 
if I took you to your disco club, how does that 
sound?" Sue looked at Frankie and said softly 
"Boys", Frankie grinned "That sounds great Uncle 
Jack, what time shall we go?" "Now" I said "Go and 
get ready and we'll go as soon as you come down." 
They both dashed upstairs to change and Jenny and 
Trish looked at me, Jenny saying "All right 
Machiavelli, what's going on. You don't go disco 
dancing without a reason. What's happening down 
there this evening?" "Can't fool you can I Jenny 
darling?" I replied with a smile "To be honest 
darling, I thought it would be the best way to meet 
the people I'm supposed to be helping, rather than 
call them into my office where they might feel 
intimidated, that's all." Jenny grinned "That just 
goes to show why they made the right choice by 
appointing you. Anyone else would have issued 
orders for kids to attend a meeting they knew 
nothing about. I think you're going to make a 
success of this darling, don't you 'Trish?" "I sure 
do Jenny, all he needs now is a few kids showing 
some interest in doing something different." Sue 
and Frankie came bounding down the stairs and I was 
soon parking in front of the disco club where  
Kelly and Lisa started their re-entry into a social 
life. Sue introduced me to some of the committee 
members and I was soon in their tiny office talking 
to them while the girls went out and enjoyed 
themselves. Sitting with me were Danny, the 
chairman, Eddie the treasurer and Nancy one of the 
committee members and the first thing I asked was 
if anyone knew who I was. "Yes, you're Lisa and 
Sue's father" said Nancy, "I remember you from the 
problem we had with Mark Anderson." I saw Danny 
blush slightly and turned to him smiling "Did you 
see any local news on Monday?" I asked he started 
to shake his head then stopped "Hang on, my dad 
told me someone had been given a new job working 
for the kids of this town. I guess that's you, 
isn't it?" I nodded, "Yes Danny, that's why I'm 
here, before I can do anything for you, I need some 
idea of what you need, what you want and what you 
would like. I can't see any sense telling you what 
you can have, if that's not what you want. What I 
need quickly is a few sensible guys, and girls, to 
sit down and help me work out how to spend a lot of 
money in the most efficient way so that the biggest 
number of young people benefit from it." I paused 
to take a sip of the coffee by my hand while the 
three of them looked at each other, "How many do 
you want to help you Mister Bowman?" asked Eddie, 
"Call me Jack, and I need six to eight to start 
with, any more and we would get bogged down with 
all sorts of arguments, and that would mean we 
would get no where fast. I wonder if you could ask 
around some of the organisations that currently 
cater for young people, like this club, and see if 
you can get anyone interested in helping out at the 
start?" "Jack, I could get you sixty if you needed 
them, all I'd have to do is say it's you that's 
calling for help and they'd be falling over each 
other to come forward" said Danny. "Can I nominate 
Nancy as our club rep, I'll get in touch with some 
other friends of mine and see how many other names 
I can come up with." 
By Thursday I had a group of five boys and three 
girls aged between fourteen and eighteen sitting 
around a table in my office as I explained what I 
wanted them to do. "Go out and talk to your peers" 
I said "Find out what they really want from the 
city. I know you'll get some stupid suggestions but 
bring them anyway, we can all have a good laugh at 
the funny ones and discuss those that's deserve it. 
What we want to do is show them we'll listen to 
what they're saying, and act where we can. Let's 
see how many ideas you can get by next Tuesday 
shall we?" I spent Friday getting a briefing from 
Andy then we both attended my usual meeting, Andy 
being there so he could see what went on, and the 
sort of things we needed details of so we could 
answer whatever questions were thrown at us. After 
the meeting Andy and I sat in my office, "Christ 
Jack, I never knew how much work you did, I thought 
being department head was a cinch, I guess I was 
wrong. How long did you say you would be away?" I 
chuckled "Yeah, I found out the same thing when I 
took over, and I had a big mess to sort out from my 
predecessor if you remember. As for how long you 
may be doing this, I guess it's going to be at 
least a year, why Andy is it getting too much for 
you?" Andy shook his head slowly, "Not too much 
Jack, just more than I thought, that's all. I'll 
cope OK, so long as I can call on you when I have a 
problem." "Any time Andy, you have my new office 
number, if I'm not there leave a message and I'll 
get back to you, OK?" a few minutes later Andy went 
back to work and I settled down to review all that 
had gone on during the week, finding very few 
problems due to Andy's hard work, and seeing that 
we were getting more and more work to quote for 
from all over the State, and beyond. By four I had 
done all I had to and I went and had a word with 
Ted about the way we were increasing our workload, 
"If we're not careful Ted, we'll soon need at least 
two more full time programmers and the same number 
of contract workers, got any ideas about the boards 
policy on increasing the staffing levels?" "Strange 
you should say that Jack, I was talking to Harry 
after the meeting this morning and he asked why you 
didn't bring it up then, care to tell me?" replied 
Ted, I shrugged "Because I thought it was your 
territory, not the boards. I didn't think you'd be 
too happy if I asked them to make a decision like 
that, and I also didn't know then how many we might 
need until I'd looked over the figures." Ted 
started to laugh and I spun round as I heard his 
secretaries door open and Harry come into the 
office, offering Ted a ten dollar bill, "Damn it 
Jack, I'm going to have to stop taking these sucker 
bets from Ted. You just repeated verbatim what he 
said you'd say, that's the third one I've lost." 
The fact he was smiling told me he wasn't too 
unhappy to have lost, and we sat down as Ted's 
secretary drought a tray of cups in for us. As we 
sat drinking our coffee Harry invited me to a party 
he was having at his house on Saturday, "I want you 
to bring your family too Jack, my wife insists, 
OK?" I smiled as I replied "OK Harry, but I'll have 
to confirm it with you later on, when I've spoken 
to Jenny, you see I don't know what she might have 
arranged for us. You do know I've got my sister in 
law and her daughter staying with us, don't you?" 
Harry shook his head, "It doesn't matter how many 
there are Jack, just so long as  Kelly, Lisa and 
Susan are there," "Ahhh..." I said, "Therein lies a 
problem Harry. Sue will be there but I don't 
know if Kelly and Lisa will be back from 
their honeymoons by then. They're due to get back 
tonight, but may be staying over for an extra 
night. I'm sorry to disappoint you this way Harry, 
but it's something I can't do anything about." 
"Damn, and I did want them there, Ah well, not to 
worry Jack, if they do get back in time bring all 
four of them please, it will really make our 
evening to have them there." As I was about to 
leave Harry said "Did you tell him Ted?" "Damn it, 
winning my bet made me forget it Harry, I'm sorry I 
didn't, do you want to do it now?" Harry grinned as 
he nodded to Ted, then he turned to me and said 
"Jack, the board has noticed that our end of year 
figures this year have shown an increase of more 
than fifty percent on our profits overall, and more 
than seventy percent in your department alone. 
Because of this it has been decided that you will 
get an extra bonus of twenty thousand dollars, and 
a salary increase of ten thousand a year. Seeing as 
this is only about two percent of the extra profit 
you've generated, I guess it's not too generous, 
but is on top of any other bonuses due to you, how 
does that sound?" I couldn't speak for a minute, 
then I said slowly "I guess it sounds OK Harry, but 
I can't accept the salary increase, I'm not here 
more than two days a week right now, and it may be 
the same for almost a year. I can't see how you can 
justify doing it, especially when Andy is doing 
most of my work, surely he deserves it more than I 
do?" "SHIT!" said Harry forcefully, and pulled out 
another ten spot and handed it to a smiling Ted, 
"Don't worry Jack, Andy has been given a rise too, 
in fact he should be opening his letter about now. 
As for not deserving it, do you realise Jack, that 
since you've been in the news our business has 
received double the number of enquiries we had, now 
you've been appointed to head this Youth Commission 
even more work is coming in, and that's in just a 
week, keep this up and we'll have to start 
expanding even more. And as for your original 
question to Ted, we do need more staff, and I think 
four full time employees rather than two and two 
contract staff. Do you have any idea where we can 
get them from at short notice?" I nodded, "Sure 
Harry, why don't you come down to the computer club 
this evening and I'll show you some guys that have 
just graduated, and have been working in the club 
since it started, I think you'll be pleasantly 
surprised at what you see." Pausing for a minute to 
think it over Harry said "OK Jack, but I might be a 
bit late as I'll have to go home and have dinner 
first, by the time I get back to the city it will 
be quite late." "Nah..." I said, "Come home with me 
and have dinner, then we can go early, assuming 
your wife hasn't got something planned?" Harry 
picked up the phone, called his wife and told her 
what was happening, while he was talking I 
whispered "Why doesn't Denise come as well, make it 
a night out, she can always stay and chat to Jenny 
and Trish while we're out." A few minutes later I 
was calling Jenny and telling her we would have two 
extra for dinner, and after a few more minutes 
talking to Ted and Harry I left and drove home. 
Just before six Harry and Denise arrived, and after 
re-introducing 'Trish and Frankie to them we sat 
down to dinner, Harry sitting between Sue and 
Frankie and enjoying every minutes of the meal. 
After dinner all we adults went into the Den while 
the girls did the dishes; Denise reinforced their 
invitation to their party, and also extended it to  
Kelly and Lisa and Mark and John, if they were home 
in time. After finishing our coffee Harry and I 
went to the clubhouse, much to the surprise and 
discomfort of the two company employees that were 
on duty that evening. When we were sure they could 
be spared for a few minutes Harry and I took these 
guys into their little office, sat down with 
offered drinks, and Harry told them why we were 
there. "Well sir" said Dick, the senior of the two, 
"There are a couple of lads, and a couple of girls 
that really stand out. Both have just graduated, 
and I know they're all looking for jobs. As for 
their programming skills, they're some of the best 
we have, and will soon be at a level where they'll 
need formal training, rather than what we do here." 
At Harry's request Dick went and fetched the four 
youngsters he had told us about, and while he was 
out he asked me to tell them what it was all about, 
giving me the final decision as to whether I 
offered them any sort of position in the company. 
When the four of them were sat down I introduced 
myself, telling them who I was and what I did, I 
then said "I've been told you're some of the most 
knowledgeable members of this club, and I've also 
been told you're all looking for jobs, having just 
graduated, is that right?" they all nodded, and 
suddenly looked very alert as they realised 
something was in the air. "OK, I want you to listen 
to what I'm going to say, go home and think about 
it, then call me on Monday with your decision, 
understand?" They all nodded silently as I paused. 
I then continued, "Right, what is on offer to you 
is the following, a six month trial period to see 
if you're as good as Dick said you were. If you are 
good enough you get a full time job, at a 
reasonable salary, which will include one day a 
week at college as part of your apprenticeship. The 
rest of the week you will be placed with an 
experienced programmer and work with him, until 
such time you prove you're able to work on your 
own. The six month trial period is not negotiable, 
if at the end you don't come up to scratch, you're 
out, if you do, you start the next day. Any 
questions?" four heads shook and they looked 
between themselves smiling. "Now" I continued "It 
may seem a bit harsh to say you're out if you don't 
come up to scratch, and believe me, our standards 
are very high. What you have to realise is that a 
simple mistake can cause major problems, and cost 
mega bucks, I work on the precept 'Speed is fine, 
Accuracy is final', and I've not been proved wrong 
yet. You have to be good to be selected now, you 
have to be ten times better to be kept on. Anyone 
want to pull out without thinking about it?" Four 
heads shook, and I told then they could go back to 
what they were doing while Harry and I talked over 
what had happened. "A bit hard weren't you Jack, 
putting them under a lot of pressure even before 
they start. Is that good practice?" I grinned at 
Harry, "Well Harry, from the day they start they'll 
be under a lot of pressure to get a job done, 
right, and on schedule. That can lead to a lot of 
pressure, if they can't take it now, they won't 
take it when it matters. If they do start I'll be 
telling their supervisors to stretch then to their 
limits, just to see if they can stand the pace. If 
they do, fine, we have four good workers, if not, 
we don't have poor ones. Everyone knows where they 
stand from the outset, and nobody has anything to 
complain about." Harry grinned and stood up, 
slapped me on the back and said "Jeez, I'm glad Ted 
took you on in this job Jack, carry on like this 
and you'll end up with his job. As it is I agree 
with every word you've said, and I want you to say 
the same to a meeting I'll be setting up in a weeks 
time. Just have some details of how you operate 
your department with you, and be prepared for some 
hard questions from some of those there at the 
time. Now I think it's time we went and joined our 
wives before we're in trouble don't you?"
