GCE was one of the first companies to make genetic engineering a viable commercial practice. It did help that the exploration half of the company had been the first to capitalize on the technology which made reaching the stars more than a dream. Because to put it bluntly in all probability people on earth would not have accepted the genetic engineering which would one day make outpost one a planet habitable by humanity even if that branch of humanity was no longer quite human. Space when humanity arrived there turned out to be mostly a vast desert with a few fiercely guarded oases. While honor kept those with higher technology from simply enslaving humanity it did not keep them from taking every other advantage possible. Still the human race being canny from it's own history mostly came to respect and deal with the peoples of the larger universe only slightly poorer than they started. Competition for livable space being fierce it was a wonder that humanity found any thing but barren rocks not even fit to strip mind for the most part but while the older races pushed the newcomers into what would seem the least likely places humanity seemed to once in a while retain the luck that had managed to free them from their small sphere of influence upon earth and did find several worlds which could be inhabited if one were not to picky. One of these worlds was outpost one; while more than ninety percent of the planet's surface was covered by a slightly saline water ocean the air was sweet and breathable to terran life while there were few creatures of any size to make life unpalatable. So it was that GCE advertised for volunteers among its employees and among the general populace. Then sought further among the dolphins especially whom they had modified to help humanity make better use of the oceans of their home world. It took some years and some hard fighting of various other interest groups some of whom regarded all of space with superstition. However among some the yearning for profit and adventure won a victory over fear and other obstacles. So that as in the past people who sought to advance themselves also advanced the cause of the race as a whole. A generation was spent in orbit on further modifying the human portion of the original expedition so that they would be able to stand long periods of time in the oceans of their new home world until they shared about one third of the genetic makeup of their dolphin partners yet maintained their ability to leave the water and live on land for extended periods of time. So with the dolphins modified to use underwater tools and the humans modified to live with them they set off to begin the task of making room for more of humanities burgeoning numbers in the vast reaches of space. Since that time three more ships from the home world were sent with technological supplies and scientists; especially those specializing in genetic manipulation. Then a change in philosophy and direction from Gencom Exploration dumped three shiploads of undesirables on the only sizable land mass of the world and suddenly ceased contact. This is a short history of outpost one which brings us to the present situation about three generations have passed since the greater mass of humanity stopped all contact with outpost one, there are three intelligent races sharing the surface the largest in number being modified dolphins the next being modified humans who live and work with the dolphins for the most part and mostly unmodified humans who live on the major land mass of the world. This situation is a bit uncomfortable for everyone as they have little hope of reaching back into the stars to find out what has happened to the world from which they came. Most of the ships that brought them to this world remain in orbit while the shuttles which were used to land are on the surface however with so little land available to build an industrial base the people know it will be only a matter of time until they are stranded here unless their mother world resumes contact. Two small outposts fitted with some advanced manufacturing equipment are situated on the nearer of outpost one's three fair sized moons. But while they have unlimited metal resources they must depend on the immature schools and universities of outpost one to provide them with trained personnel in addition to some of their food water and air. On the surface of outpost one the second largest land mass (not much more than an island by earth's standards) houses a university and training center for the dolphin human teams who explore the oceans and bring forth both mineral wealth and food from thence. Further down the archipelago is training station Adrian there we find a small colony of men women and dolphins training and working together to bring their race's into an even closer relationship. There now are born the almost half sibling pair Bali and Tri-na-ta. While this pair is not utterly unique they will remain the focus for most of the rest of this story. Trained together from birth the two share a bond greater than most siblings or even married couples, each understands they need the other for survival in their future as well as plain liking each other at the present. After all what girl would not want to have her own half brother dolphin to swim and play with even if said play was directed by the older members of the community toward learning still both teachers and parents understood well the need for rest and relaxation. So many artificial and natural coves were left untended except by children at play on rest days. And on this day we find Bali and her brother in one of them engaging in a little play. -- Pursuant to the Berne Convention, this work is copyright with all rights reserved by its author unless explicitly indicated. +---------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | alt.sex.stories.moderated ----- send stories to: | | FAQ: Moderator: | +---------------------------------------------------------------------------+ |Archive: Hosted by Alt.Sex.Stories Text Repository | |, an entity supported entirely by donations. | +---------------------------------------------------------------------------+
