He often did this when feeling depressed. His team had lost another game. Everett knew it had nothing to do with his team's knowledge of the sport. His team knew as much as any team out there. Problem was, they just didn't have the physical ability to put their knowledge into action. There was a joke going around the school district that his entire team had less muscles than some of the larger players at other schools. Now Everett's job was on the line. He had been brought in to turn around the team's losing streak. He was the local boy made pro. As an athlete, he had a sterling record; high school quarterback of the championship team his junior and senior years; MVP of his college team, three out of four years; and a brief stint in the NFL before an injury in a game ended his career. And Everett had managed wondrous things in the time he had worked with the team. The team had moved from last place out of ten in the district to fourth, but that wasn't good enough for the powers that had brought him back as coach. The Alumni council (mostly ex-jocks themselves) wanted a championship team, and nothing else would do. Everett looked at his face in the polished metal of the trophy and sighed. The trophy was given to him when he won the championship his junior year. It was real gold (although only 10 or 12K), and the first trophy he had ever gotten in football. It held a lot of sentimental value, and he wished he could share the joy of winning with his team. They were good kids, but there was no way, at least not this year, they were going to be a championship team. Maybe next year, with some intensive physical training, but not this year. "I just wish I had a way to help them be the winners I know they could be." Everett nearly jumped out of his seat when he heard a voice say, "Well, me boy-o, your wish has come true. And that one I'll give you for free." Everett looked over and saw a two foot tall man, dressed all in green, standing right in the center of the room. "Who are you?" "Patty be me name, and being a leprechaun is me game." "Now I know I've cracked." "Me friend, aren't we all a little cracked? But regardless of the state of your mental faculties, I am prepared to grant you a wish to use as you see fit. If you so desired, you could use that wish to turn your team into superstars." "And what's it going to cost me? My soul?" "Nothing so intangible, coach. It be the powers above and below that be wanting that part of you. No, sir, my needs are more material. I collect gold, plain and simple. So in return for that little trophy of yours, I'll grant you one wish." Everett thought about it. He could use the wish to turn his team into superstars, or he could wish for tenure so they couldn't get rid of him, and he could really work with the team next year and whip them into shape. But there was the matter of giving up his trophy. Patty said, "I see you be havin' a bit of trouble parting with that lovely creation. I understand it has some personal significance to you? I'll tell you what. The trophy isn't real high quality gold, but there is a bit of it, and I can tell that you're a good man, so I'll give you three wishes in trade. But with those wishes comes a free warning. By ancient laws set down by Oberon, Lord of the Fae, millennia before you walked the earth, the wishes I grant must be what you ask for, not necessarily what you want, so consider your words carefully." Everett considered it, then slowly handed the trophy over to Patty. "So, think about your words, and make your wishes." Everett thought about it for a while, then said, "First wish, no matter what other changes I wish for, I wish that everyone would think that the changed to form is what has been all along." "Finally, a sensible wish! Granted. Whatever other wishes you make, no one will remember a reality different from what you create." "Okay, second wish, I wish that all the members of my team had perfect bodies; perfect being defined by the individual. Each person getting fine tuned to be the fastest, strongest, sturdiest, most intelligent person that their individual genetics will allow." "Well thought out. Granted." Across campus, James Mulder, the team's captain, was in class. No one noticed as his body filled out, becoming bigger, stronger, and faster. Back in the coach's office, Patty asked, "You've done a pretty good job of wishing so far. So what's your last wish going to be?" Everett thought about it. With their new bodies, his team should take the championship, even considering that they had to win every game left in the season. But there was always the chance something might happen. Finally, he said, "Final wish, I wish that my team could compete in any sport with any other team in any school in the city." "Boy-o, if that's your wish, then I'll grant it, but perhaps you should rethink your wording on that wish." Everett thought about it and said, "I wish that my team members were able to out perform any other varsity team in any sport in any school in the city." Patty shrugged. "Only slightly better than the first. But, granted." And with a twinkle, Patty disappeared, thinking, "At least with your first wish, not even you will realize what you've done." ************ TWO MONTHS LATER... The reporter asked his cameraman, "We ready to roll?" After a quick nod, he said, "This is Chet Rivers with News 11 sports. We're here with Everett Wilson, head coach of the champion Service High Cougars. Coach Wilson, how does it feel to bring your team from last to first place in under a season?" "It feels great." "Did you ever have any doubts?" "To be honest, when I saw the team, I wondered if it wasn't some kind of publicity ploy, but after I saw them in action, I knew they had the potential to go all the way." "Our viewers are wondering why, since your team is all girls, why you didn't declare them as such." "The viewers may not know, Chet, but according to school district rules, if a team declares itself 'all-female', it can only compete against other teams whose members are all female. By being only female, but not declaring as such, we get to use a loophole and prove ourselves by taking on any team in the city, male or female, including those ones from the private, all-girls schools. These girls are the best and deserve a chance to prove it." "And you certainly did that. In the last two months you have defeated all comers, many of them all male teams. Can we get a chance to talk with the team?" "Sorry, Chet, but the ladies deserve their privacy as they change." Inside the locker room, Janey Mulder, the team captain, stood on a bench and yelled, "Here's to Coach Wilson, who took us all the way to the top! If I were into guys, he'd be the first I'd want!" The rest of the girls all cheered their agreement. Janey got down and sat next to her girlfriend, Samantha. "You seem preoccupied, love. What's up?" Sam replied, "I don't know. Just feeling weird again." "Why ever for?" "Doesn't this strike you as odd? Not only are we an all girls team who competes with guy teams, but, with one exception, we're all lesbians. There's not a single girl here who's taken a home ec class, but most of us have taken at least one or two shop classes. And us. We've been friends since kindergarten, yet, all of a sudden, two months ago we find each other to be the sexiest girls we've ever met." "So?" "Well, it's almost like everything was, or at least was supposed to be, up till two months ago, different. Like we were supposed to be... men." Janey reached over and stroked Sam's breast. "Feel that pleasure, babe. Do you WANT to be a man?" Samantha swooned. "No." Janey kissed her girlfriend. "Then don't worry about it." Sam just shrugged and kissed Janey back.
