"Lilly! What are you doing here?" she asked the girl. "I came to find you, I have a little free time before school! What's going on, Rhianna?" "Nothing, I just..." "I'm not a kid anymore Rhianna. I know you're up to something. I heard you talk about alcohol and the town Sheriff! Who were you talking to?" Shit, thought Rhianna. "Okay. Okay, I need you to keep a secret." "About what, Rhianna? If you're up to something bad I have to tell my Dad!" "Your Dad already knows, and it's not something bad." "Dad knows? I don't believe you." "Will you let me explain?" Rhianna asked. The teenager nodded, a very concerned look on her face. Rhianna went over to a set of pillows and knelt on one and Lilly joined her. Rhianna felt stupid about being caught. She felt that since she came here she had lost about twenty IQ points. "Did you know June Olws?" Rhianna asked the girl. "Yes, of course I did, she and Sol were getting married in the spring." "Were you told what happened to her?" "She...er...she was killed, they don't know how. Dad told us they found her a few days ago." "She was murdered, Lilly." "But...no one here does things like that! That's an outsiders disease!" "I hope so, Lilly. But your Dad can't be sure, that's why I'm here. I'm a Cop, Lilly. An agent of the FBI. Do you know what that is?" "Sure. You work for the Government." "Yes, and your Dad and Sheriff Kinkade needed some extra help to find out who murdered June and Mary and Alice." "But they...I didn't know they had been murdered. We were told they had died from accidents. Mary was one of my best friends!" Lilly began to cry and Rhianna reached out to comfort her. Lilly pushed her away. "No! You're here to spy on us!" "I'm here to help you, not spy on you! We have to get whoever doing this before they take another one of your friends, or even you!" Lilly looked shocked. "I...You think it will happen again?" "So far there is nothing to say that it wont. Which is why Paul brought me here." "What about Matthew, is he a part of this too or are you fooling him as well?" "He's a part of it, he was the one who recommended me to your Dad, and it was Matthew who thought of the wedding idea." "So you did know him from before?" "Yes, we've known each other a while." "I thought so. You guys couldn't have been acting. But why come here in secret, why not tell everyone who you are?" "Would you talk to someone from the outside about private things if they just came here to ask questions?" Rhianna asked her. Lilly thought about that. "I guess not." Rhianna sighed. She knew what she had told the girl was a shock. "Lilly, I could use your help." "To get Mary's killer? Anything!" "Could you point out a few people for me, help me by being my guide. Maybe keep your ears open for me?" "Sure. I can do that. I'm sorry I yelled at you." "It's okay, I understand." "What about the wedding? Are you really going to marry Matthew tomorrow?" "I guess I'll have to. We can't finish this by then." "But to get married without meaning it! It's wrong! You do mean it don't you? You do love Matthew don't you?" Rhianna didn't know how to answer that. "I think you do, but you had better make up your mind about it before the wedding. I can see why you have to go around in secret to find a killer, but to fake getting married!" "Please Lilly, people can't know!" Rhianna pleaded. Lilly shook her head. "I need to talk to Dad about that. But I'll keep quiet till then. And I'll help you. What do you need first?" Rhianna smiled. "A bath!" Lilly smiled softly. "Yeah, I guess you do. Say, who were you talking to when I came in?" Rhianna got to her feet. "I'll show you." She led the girl into the bedroom and dug under her bed for the pack. She made sure Lilly didn't see her gun as she pulled out her Cell Phone, there was no predicting what Lilly would do if she found out Rhianna had smuggled that in here. "Oh," said Lilly when she saw the phone, "I should have guessed. Dr Miller has one of those." "Dr Miller?" Rhianna asked. "Yeah, he has one for emergencies. In case someone gets hurt or sick so bad he cant do anything and wants them off the mountain." "I thought you all stayed away from technology." Rhianna said, puzzled. "We do! But we're not stupid. We know things may come up that we cant cope with and principles aside, a person's life is worth more than our way of life. Dr Miller has modern tools and drugs here so we don't get sick, and he even has an electric generator for some of his things. He tries not to use it much, and is very good with mountain remedies, but when he needs it he uses it." "I'll have to meet him." Rhianna said honestly, thinking about who had access to that phone. Suddenly this isolated community was not so isolated. "I'll take you later. Right now I only have time to take you to the bathhouse and see if anyone there might be someone you might want to talk to." "Thanks, I'll just put this away. You don't touch it, understood?" "Yes, Rhianna." The two women went to the bathhouse and this time Rhianna didn't hesitate to pull off her loin cloth. She looked at it, holding it in one hand. It was pretty messed up from her time in the kitchen. "Don't worry Rhianna, I have plenty you can borrow." Lilly said generously. Lilly didn't undress, for she had to leave almost right away, but she did escort Rhianna inside. "You're in luck, see that guy with the bright red hair in the big tub?" Lilly said. "Yes." "His name is Cory, he and Mary were courting a little, but she broke it off with him a little while before she went missing." Rhianna watched him for a moment. He seemed in good spirits as he joked with his buddies in the room's largest tub. Rhianna decided not to go talk to him now, she would have been the only woman there and enlightened or not, she would have felt uncomfortable and defensive being naked among them. "Do you know what his schedule is?" "He works in the glassworks. I expect he'll be there later." "Glassworks?" Lilly giggled. "Sure, where we make our glass!" Rhianna looked around and spotted Sol in one of the smaller tubs. She decided to see him first. "I'll see you later Lilly, there's stuff I want to ask you about Mary when you have time." "Sure Rhianna. I'll stay quiet about everything." "Thanks." The teenager left and Rhianna padded over with her towel and soap until she got to the tub. Sol was relaxing in it with a few other people, but didn't seem to be interacting with them. "Hi, mind if I join you?" Rhianna asked. Sol opened his eyes and the others looked over. "Sure!" someone said. Rhianna got into the hot water and began to wash herself. She was nervous about doing this in front of strangers, but like the day before she quickly got used to it. She took her time and before she was done the other people in the tub began to leave. Once she and Sol were alone she began to talk. "I guess we haven't had a chance to really say hello!" Rhianna said to him with a smile. "I guess not." Sol replied. "Hello?" "Hello, Rhianna." Rhianna finished rinsing herself and waded over to sit next to him. "I heard about June. I'm sorry." Sol nodded, but didn't look at her. "I heard that the two of you were getting married?" "Yeah, right after thaw." "It's hard to loose someone you love, isn't it?" Rhianna said gently. "You'd think so wouldn't you." Sol said quietly. "If you don't want to talk about it, that's okay." said Rhianna softly. Sol shrugged. Rhianna leaned back. She wasn't sure how to proceed. Sol needed someone trained in grief counseling to talk to him, and she wasn't that someone. She stood up. "I'll go now, you take care." "No, wait! I'd like you to stay for a while. I could use the company." "Alright." Rhianna said, sinking back into the water. "Thanks." "I don't mind. I can wait here until your friends show up." "They're all at work right now. I should be too but I needed some time alone." Rhianna nodded. They sat in silence for a while, and Rhianna's mind began to wander as she thought about how badly she was pruning up. She watched as Cory and his buddies all left the bathhouse as a group. "Can I tell you a secret?" Sol said suddenly. "Why do you want to tell me?" Rhianna asked him, curious. "You wouldn't be shocked like everyone else here, and you'll be gone in a while so the secret will go with you." Sol took a breath. "And I think I can trust you not to tell my Dad." "Well, that depends on the secret." Rhianna cautioned him. Sol nodded, but gave Rhianna the impression that he wasn't really listening. "I'd go tell Father Logan, but I have to be able to look him in the eye the rest of my life." Sol told her. Father Logan, thought Rhianna? "June and I, before we got engaged...we...er....we had sex...once." Sol stared at the water, his voice only barely audible over the background noise. If Rhianna had found out about this a couple of days ago, she wouldn't have thought much of it. But now knowing the strict rules that applied here concerning premarital contact, she was amazed. Sol was confessing to her what constituted as a deadly sin to these people. She wondered just how clean this clean society really was. "That's a serious matter." Rhianna said at last. "I know. It's been all I can think about since I was told she was dead. We had sex, kept it a secret, and June was punished for it." "That's not true. June wasn't punished for having sex with you." "Yes she was. She liked it, she liked it a lot and when we got engaged I told her that we had to wait until we got married. She wanted to do it again, but I told her no. She wanted it so bad she was punished!" "Do you think you're going to get punished too? Is that what's worrying you?" Sol looked at her for the first time since she arrived at the tub. "You don't know, you can't know. I DO know." He stood up and climbed out of the tub. "Don't tell my Dad." he pleaded. "I wont." promised the agent. She watched the young man walk away, wondering if any sense would come from this conversation. Rhianna did some exploring. In just her dress, as her loin cloth was too soiled to put back on, Rhianna walked the passage ways that bound the buildings of the compound together. She found that the entire complex took on a shape like an 'H' once you figured out where everything was. The bar across the middle was the huge building housing the Great Hall, the kitchen, the enormous pantry/storehouse, and the bathhouse. The two southern legs were buildings that were given over strictly to residential space, and two barns for horses, cows and chickens. The two northern legs were men's country. Here were the workshops where the men spent their day. Rhianna discovered a blacksmiths, a pottery works, a large wood shop, a slaughterhouse and a glassworks. She also found a couple of areas she was not allowed to enter at all, she had no idea what was in those. She ended up in the glassworks and watched from the doorway as Cory practiced his skill. She had never seen glass blowing before and was impressed with the way he deftly shaped a molten mess of glass into a delicate looking jug. The heat from the furnace was incredible and Rhianna wondered how they generated it. It was so hot that even by the door she could feel herself sweat in her dress. She thought the men inside had to be roasting, but instead of being stripped down like the women were in the kitchen, Cory and the others had on a full set of leathers plus a very thick apron to protect themselves from getting burned. Rhianna only recognized Cory by his shocking red hair. She wondered how she was going to broach the subject of Mary with him, and then got an idea. She was actually eating lunch with Paul, Elizabeth and Matthew when she got her chance. She saw Cory come in with his work mates and settle down for food. She had already talked to Paul about her idea and, while he wasn't too thrilled with it, he agreed to help. Rhianna caught his eye and nodded. "Rhianna," Paul said. "Matthew told me that you could play the piano." Matthew looked up, he hadn't said anything of the sort but knew something was afoot. "Yes Paul. I got a lot of lessons as a kid." Rhianna replied. "I'd like to hear something, there's a piano on the stage, would you like to try it?" Elizabeth looked at Paul like he had suggested that she take him up on stage and give him a blow job! "Paul! That's Mary's piano. She can't!" "Mary isn't going to be coming back, you know that. I think she would want someone to play it." Paul said gently. "But Paul!" "Hush, wife. Go Rhianna, give it a try." Matthew watched carefully as Rhianna got up and made her way onto the stage. She felt eyes upon her as she moved the piano slightly and pulled out the seat. She didn't look at the people in the room, there was only one set of eyes that she was concerned about now and she didn't want to spook him. She sat down and hoped she remembered how to play it. She knew the piece she wanted to play, it was the only Chopin she knew, Prelude in D flat major, a piece she had practiced for what seemed like forever as a kid. She began and the dusty old piano filled the air in the room with it's slightly out of tune melody. Rhianna's playing was laborious, full of pauses and gaps where she had to think about key changes, and no one could have said that her recital actually flowed, but it was Chopin none the less and everyone in the hall at the moment stopped talking to listen. Rhianna kept playing until she felt a hand on her shoulder. She looked up and saw Cory. "Stop." he said. "No more." "I'm sorry, I was asked to play." Rhianna said to him. Cory looked upset, but not angry upset. "Well, could you hold off when I'm around?" "I didn't know you didn't like music!" "I do, it's just...well, you playing this thing brings back hard memories." "Hard memories?" asked the agent gently. "Yeah. Just stop, okay?" "Alright. Do you want to talk about her?" "How do you know it was about a woman?" Cory asked her. Rhianna gave him that look women do so well, the non-verbal equivalent of "Duh!!! It's not that hard to figure out. Men!" Cory shrugged. "Well, you're right. Everybody else knows, so I guess there's no harm in telling you. This piano belonged to a woman I thought I might be marrying some day, but she died not too long ago, and I guess I'm not ready yet to see someone else in her place." "I'm sorry, I didn't know!" lied Rhianna. "When were you going to get married?" "We weren't. She and I...parted not long before she...went away. Look, I don't want to talk about it. Just keep away from the piano for now, okay?" Rhianna nodded and Cory left her. It was a foot in the door at least. She went back to her table. She spent the afternoon with Elizabeth, Lilly and about two dozen other women in the Great Hall, scrubbing the floor, tables and walls with big scrubbing brushes. Lilly had brought her another loin cloth and that was all she wore as she worked, not wanting to get her dress wet. At one point while on her knees, she saw Matthew watching her from one of the doorways. She knew full well that he was looking at her breasts as they rocked back and forth with her movements. She decided to tease him by exaggerating the movement and shifting so he had a good view. After a few strokes she sat up, put an arm across her chest and looked straight at him. Matthew grinned and left the room. Rhianna smiled and noticed Lilly watching her. "You love him." Lilly mouthed silently. Rhianna looked away and got back to her task. After supper Rhianna relaxed with the family in the bathhouse. She was very tired having gone directly from lunch preparations to cleaning and to supper preparations without much of a break. It wasn't that she wasn't fit, it was just that it was work she wasn't used to. Her feet also hurt after all this time on hard wood floors with no shoes. Something else to get used to. At the far end of the bathhouse she saw some low benches and for the first time saw them being used for something other than sitting. A nude couple was using one, the woman lying flat on the bench on her stomach, her arms extended forward to the legs of the bench. Straddling her was a man, presumably her husband for they both wore leather wrist bands, and he was rubbing her back with something he poured out of a bottle. His strokes were slow and full and Rhianna thought that it looked SO good. "I could use a good massage." she mumbled to herself. Elizabeth was sitting next to her and heard her. "I could give you a rub down if you want, dear." she said. "You did look a little stiff this evening, it would be no trouble." Rhianna thought about Elizabeth naked on her back. "That's okay. I'll live. But thanks for the offer." "As long as you're sure. You know, I'm somewhat proud of you, working as hard as you've been, even with your morning off. Usually outsiders can't keep up as well as you have. Matthew picked a good one in you!" Rhianna smiled. She watched as the man giving the massage finished up with his wife's back. He got off her and reached for her hands. Rhianna's eyes opened wide as she realized that he had actually tied his wife down for the massage as he untied the cords from the legs of the bench. The woman rolled over onto her back and he retied her wrists before pouring more oil on her chest. "It's not polite to stare." Paul said, and Rhianna forced herself to look away. "Sorry." Paul smiled. "It's okay. I know such actions are new to you. You'll grow used to them in time." "He's not going to...I mean, just how far can you GO in public?" Rhianna asked him with a glance at an amused Lilly. Paul chuckled. "Not as far as you think. Don't worry, I expect they will be heading back to their rooms shortly." Rhianna sighed, and smiled. "Speaking of rooms," said Elizabeth, "tomorrow begins your wedding preparations and it all starts with you cleaning the apartment you and Matthew are going to use." "Not more cleaning!" groaned the agent. The family laughed. "I'm afraid so, Rhianna. Tradition demands it. You get to clean and arrange your new home as a married woman, ready for when you bring your man home." "Okay. I guess that won't be so bad. I was kind of wondering about wedding arrangements anyway. Will I get to see my dress then? And what about the ceremony? Do I get to meet your Father Logan beforehand?" The family stared at her. "Rhianna," Paul said, "Didn't Matthew tell you anything about the wedding ceremony itself?" "No." Rhianna replied, suddenly worried. Lilly burst out laughing. Elizabeth patted Rhianna's arm. "Don't worry dear, we'll see you through it." "Can you tell me about it now?" Rhianna asked, now very worried. They did. "You're kidding!" They assured her they weren't. "I'm going to kill him!" Rhianna said, gritting her teeth. She had an opportunity as she and the family headed back to their quarters. Matthew was waiting outside their door. "Rhianna, I've been waiting for you." he said. "Good, I have a few things to discuss." Rhianna said evenly. Lilly giggled as she went past them into the apartment. "You coming in Matthew?" Paul asked him. "Sure, we'll be just a minute." Matthew answered. "No." Rhianna said. "There's something I need his help with first. I'll make sure he brings me back." Paul nodded and followed his wife in. "I'm glad I found you, there's something I found out you might want to know." Matthew said once they were alone. "Why didn't you tell me about the wedding ceremony?" Rhianna asked, poking him in the chest. "Ow! You never asked!" "Never asked because I thought it would be like any other wedding I've been to, not the event that you all have planned for me!" she poked him a few more times. "Stop that! I didn't want to tell you in case it made you change your mind about coming!" "Change my mind? It would definitely have made me THINK about this little trip a little more before signing on, THAT'S for sure!" "I said, stop poking me!" "Why? Cant take it?" Matthew grabbed the hand that had been injuring him and twisted it around. Rhianna, trained in hand to hand, almost managed to break free, but Matthew played dirty. He grabbed one of her breasts for a second and distracted her just long enough to turn her around so her hand was up behind her. From that point on it was just a matter of strength as he caught her other hand and quickly tied the two together with a rawhide cord. Rhianna would have screamed, but for some reason she wasn't sure about she kept silent, although she did gasp as Matthew tightened the cord. In moments she was bound with her hands behind her, wrists back to back and her thumbs and little fingers trapped in loops. "That's what I'll do if you keep on poking me, Pet." Matthew said firmly. "Okay, you made your point, now let me go." "Not yet. Let's sort out this wedding first." "Alright. Let's talk on the way to Dr Miller's." Rhianna said, trying to get comfortable. She wondered why all the men here bound hands like this instead of the more conventional way of using crossed wrists. "Doc Miller's?" Matthew said. "Yes. I want to ask him about his phone." "Okay, he's down this way." Matthew took one of Rhianna's elbows and began to walk her. "About the wedding. Now that you know, do you still want to do it?" "Do we have a choice? I don't think we do." Rhianna replied. "I can go through with it. I'm just glad that it isn't going to be for real." "Don't say that to anyone here. Marriage is sacred here." "What about you, Matthew? What is marriage to you?" Matthew didn't talk for a moment. "I think of it as sacred too. That's why I haven't taken that step yet I guess. There were a number of women I could have done so with, including Sharon, the girl that left me just before I adopted you!" "So, how do you feel, how do you really feel about this wedding tomorrow?" Rhianna asked. Matthew took a deep breath, stalling. "Here's the surgery." he said, and guided the agent through a doorway. Inside they found a very clean waiting room, with plenty of pillows and chairs. "Kneel there." pointed Matthew. "I'll go get Dr. Miller." "Aren't you going to untie me first?" Matthew ignored her and went through another door. He came back with another man about his age. "Hello, Rhianna. I was hoping to meet you soon." he said, extending a hand. Then he saw that she was bound. He looked over at Matthew. "Trouble?" "No, just a game." "Ah!" smiled Doc Miller. "Matthew tells me that you have something to ask me." Rhianna had been thinking about how to approach the subject of the phone without blowing her cover. She hadn't expected to be bound at this meeting, but she couldn't think of any other way. "Yes, doctor. Say, you aren't related to Gabe Miller are you?" she asked, suddenly curious. "My Great Grandfather. He was the original doctor for the community, and my Dad and I both followed in his footsteps. We also followed him another way, my name's Gabe, the forth!" He chuckled and Rhianna and Matthew both smiled. "Can I ask how qualified you are?" Rhianna said. "I mean no offense by that!" "None taken, and it's good that you ask. I graduated from Boston University Medical School and interned at St Eligious for five years before coming back here. My Father and I both run this place now, although he leaves most of the day to day stuff to me. I'm a fully qualified G.P." "But what about stuff you aren't qualified for?" "Well, that doesn't happen often, but if I need to I can always call for help. I keep a cell phone here and can always use it to call for an air ambulance if the need arises. Don't worry Rhianna, just because we've all forsaken the outside world's technology, doesn't mean we've forsaken our common sense. My Great Grandfather saw that it was important for us to stay current, medically speaking, and we've all been the better for it! You're quite safe with me." he smiled. "I hear you use modern medical equipment!" "Only when I have to. You'd be surprised how effective some of the more traditional treatments are! In fact I was just grinding up some newts tongue before you came in!" Rhianna's eyes opened wide and Gabe laughed. "Just kidding!" Matthew chuckled. He knew Gabe Miller well, they grew up together and left the compound at the same time. Gabe to go to medical school, and Matthew to pursue his fortune. Matthew knew all about the young doctor's strange sense of humor, he was the practical joker of the community. "Good joke, doctor." Rhianna said. "I was wondering, would it be possible for me to use your phone. I didn't believe Matthew when he told me there weren't any up here, and there's a friend I told I would call when I got a chance." Gabe Miller the fourth shook his head. "Sorry, Rhianna. The phone is off limits. Only for emergencies. Your friend will have to wait until you leave the mountain." "There's no way I can use it?" "Not one. It's kept locked up, and only me, my Dad and the nurses can get to it. And they won't help you either." Rhianna sighed. "I guess it couldn't hurt to ask!" "Nothing hurts here!" smiled the doctor. Rhianna struggled to her feet. "Oh well. Thank you Doctor." "Come again, any time. Matthew, you'll have to bring her by sometime after the wedding." "Sure thing Gabe." Matthew said. "Oh, there is something you could do for me now." Matthew whispered in his friends ear, and with a glance and a grin at Rhianna, the doctor disappeared into the back for a moment. He came out hiding something in his hand and passed it quickly to Matthew. "Now this wont hurt a bit!" Matthew said to Rhianna. In a flash Rhianna found herself biting down on a wide wooden bit and she struggled as Matthew tied the cord attached to it's ends around her head. "There you go, Pet. You look lovely!" "She does. You picked a good woman there, Matt." said the doctor. Rhianna stood there, fuming. But she held her temper, not wanting to create a scene. "We have to go, Gabe. I have to get her back to my brother's. I'll see you at the wedding?" "Wouldn't miss it!" The men shook hands and Matthew led the bound and gagged Agent out into the passageway. Rhianna moaned to get the gag taken out, but Matthew didn't remove it, nor did he say a word. He did smile a lot as they walked and Rhianna hoped that he was having a VERY good time. Eventually they reached Paul's and Matthew knocked on the door. Paul opened it and again raised his eyebrows at her condition. "Now what did she do?" Paul asked. "Nothing, we're just playing. You can let her go once I leave." Paul smiled and went back in, leaving the door open. "Rhianna, this will be the last time we see each other before the wedding, they wont let me see you at all tomorrow." He lifted her head and kissed her gagged lips. Rhianna could feel the warmth of his kiss even past her gag, and she felt a little of her anger float away. "You want to know what marriage means to me?" he asked with a smile. He turned her and pointed her at the door. With a swat on her behind he propelled her through. She turned, but he was gone.
