It had taken a month for it to grow that much and she was only now starting to feel confident about her looks again. She pulled closed the zipper of her bag and took one last look around her former bedroom. The gold cage in the corner of the room looked dull and lifeless now, it's magic gone, maybe never to return. As she stood she heard a familiar sound pass by outside, familiar enough to jog her memory of those final frightening moments aboard the 'Siku'. She and Tonya were lying flat on the deck of the 'Siku', the gunwale protecting them from being directly hit by the bullets from the other boat. The gunman was getting better with his shots, probably because they were getting closer and closer with each passing second. Black smoke was starting to come out of the engine cover set in the deck and Maria could hear the engines laboring to keep up the insane pace that Rhianna had set. There was thud above her as another bullet embedded itself in the woodwork and Maria screamed again, pressing down harder on Tonya's leg. Blood still seeped out of the unconscious girl's wound, and Maria was getting very frantic about it. She looked up to see if she could spot Rhianna, but saw nothing. She didn't know if the agent was still alive or not, the last she heard was Rhianna shouting into the radio that they were being shot at. Another thud and Maria pressed her head to the blood soaked deck and prayed. Then there was a roar and a shadow passed over her. Maria looked up in time to see the white belly of a helicopter pass directly over the boat. She watched as it dropped down behind them, barely a couple of feet off the water and head directly toward their pursuers. The big Coast Guard, Dolphin rescue helicopter had lifted off the back of the Cutter the moment Rhianna had made contact. It covered the distance to the sieged boat in just under a minute and the pilot didn't hesitate to do the only thing he could do, and that was get in the way of the bullets. Unlike their Navy cousins, Coast Guard choppers were unarmed, or he would have sunk the boat with the shooter aboard if he could. His mad rush to intercede however, had built up a lot of speed, something he couldn't lose all at once. The boats were so close that he over shot the second boat in his attempt to slow down. Aboard the 'Siku', Maria watched as the Dolphin pitched up to fly directly over the other boat and almost stand on it's side in an attempt to come back around. In seconds, going a lot slower than it had been, it was between them again, facing sideways and protecting them from further harm. Mako was furious! All he needed was a couple more minutes and he could have boarded the 'Siku' and gotten back the escaped slaves. But now that option was gone. He looked over at the gunman, who still held the rifle as though he thought to shoot the helicopter that now barred their way. "Don't be stupid!" Mako yelled. "Put down that gun!" The gunman said something about it only taking one good shot at this range to take out the chopper. Mako exploded. "You fool! One shot directed at that helicopter and not even being in International waters will save us. It's support vessel is only a few miles away, and they have bigger guns aboard than we do!" This got the man's attention, and he lowered the gun. "Are we still in International waters?" Mako yelled to the boat's pilot. "Yes, Mako-San." was the reply. "Turn around now, and head back to the island." The pilot acknowledged and Mako began to worry over how he could explain his failure to his boss. The pilot of the Dolphin had up to now been concentrating on his flying. Holding his craft just a few feet above a rolling sea was no easy task. It was his observer that told him that the other boat had turned and was now heading away. They watched it for a moment, to make sure it was indeed putting distance between itself and the other boat, then the pilot gave himself a little more height for safety, and let his bird drift over to the boat he had risked his life to rescue. Both men aboard the Dolphin were amazed to see that the three women aboard the 'Siku', were all naked. The radio had been shot out, so Rhianna hadn't been able to tell the Coast Guard Cutter about Tonya being shot, but the sharp eyes of the observer on the Dolphin had seen the blood and had reported it for her. Now that the shooting had stopped, Rhianna cut the engines and climbed down from the bridge where she had curled up into a ball to hide, and waved to the helicopter floating in the air behind them. She suddenly found herself very self-conscious about her nudity, and tried to cover herself up with her hands. Even though she had been without any clothing for over a month, the real world had dumped her modesty back on her like a bucket of water. The observer waved back and the Dolphin moved away to shadow the other boat. They didn't want to lose it. Maria was glad that Rhianna was okay, and gladly let the agent take over the care of Tonya. She was shaken up pretty badly. Minutes later they heard the powerful engines of the Cutter wind down, and the big ship was expertly piloted directly to the side of the smaller cabin cruiser. Without waiting for the boats to be tied to each other, two men jumped aboard and began to work on Tonya's injury. If they were surprised to see the three women naked and chained, they didn't show it. Other crewmen did though, and the Captain of the Cutter ordered anyone not directly taking part in the rescue back to their stations. A moment later another man came over with blankets and Rhianna and Maria were able to cover up. It took only minutes for them to transfer over to the 'Surpass' and soon the 'Siku' was left behind as the Cutter began chasing down the other boat. The Captain knew he was out of his jurisdiction, but with American citizens being fired upon he knew he had 'just cause'. He just hoped the Judge who tried those bastards would see it that way. Maria and Rhianna were taken below to be checked out by a Corpsman, Rhianna screaming for a phone, but Tonya was held just off the helicopter pad. The Corpsman who had treated her wanted to get her to a shore based hospital immediately, she had lost a lot of blood and he didn't have the facilities aboard to take care of that. The Dolphin was on it's way back, and would soon head back to the mainland with Tonya aboard. Now given a phone, Rhianna made contact with the FBI office in Miami where the girl would be taken, and made arrangements for Tonya to have protection. Rhianna took no chances in underestimating someone willing to Kidnap and kill a Federal Agent. The women were given coveralls to wear and someone brought a set of bolt cutters to sickbay. The manacles and chastity belts were cut off and both women were examined and declared somewhat fit by the Corpsman. While Maria gave a statement to one of the ship's officers she watched as Rhianna paced back and forth, phone to her ear, giving orders for the raid on Atamo's yacht and island home. Maria wondered where she got the strength from, and also wondered when it would finally give out. Rhianna, when she crashed, was going to crash big. Maria looked out the window of the apartment where she and Joseph had spent so many happy months together, and watched the helicopter go by a half a mile away. She was glad to be getting out of the city. If she could she would have left sooner, but being one of Atamo's victims meant her having to give statements to dozens of people about what had happened to her. Not that it came to anything. Atamo was still untouchable, at least by U.S. law enforcement, although his bid to enter the United States BDSM scene was a dead cause. Jane Carey had seen to that. But that was the least of his problems. A raid on his yacht and island retreat by local authorities had failed to turn him or his female slaves up. He had apparently flown out on his plane. There was nothing illegal left for anyone to find, unusual perhaps, but not illegal. Federal Agents in the U.S. had better luck. Because of the charges against him, all of Atamo's holdings had been seized. His ability to do business with anyone in the country had been severely compromised. He was also a wanted man, it would only be a matter of time before the Japanese government would give him up. The one true tragedy of the whole affair was that no one had been able to gather any proof of Atamo's involvement in the Kidnappings that had started the whole affair in the first place, nor was there any sign of the other FBI agent who was probably dead by now. Mako, and the other captured men, were unwilling to say anything that would compromise their boss. Their unwillingness to testify was making a lot of people very angry. The possible murder of a Federal Agent in the course of doing his duties ranked high on the FBI's "Must Solve" list. They were unwilling to give up on one of their own. For this crime, the U.S. Government was ready to extract a heavy price. But another of their members had already begun paying that price. Once the machine had taken over, and Rhianna Summer became a witness rather than an active participant in the affair, her defenses crumbled. Where she was now Maria had no idea, but she knew that Rhianna was been helped by professionals as she dealt with the horrors she had been through. Maria hoped she was okay. With a last look around, Maria picked up the bag and left the room. When she stepped into the hallway by the front door of the apartment, she smiled. And Joseph Booth smiled back. Hiro Atamo had him shot alright, but no one had bothered to make sure he was dead. He had played dead while the Kidnappers bundled up Maria, knowing that any other action on his part would not only assure his death, but also seal Maria's fate as well. After Maria had been stolen away, he managed to call for help on his bedside phone. An ambulance had gotten there just in time to stop the bleeding and save his life. He and Maria were reunited shortly after her return to the mainland. When Maria found out he was still alive, she couldn't stop crying. It was like her curse had been lifted. Their meeting took place in the New York hospital where he had been staying the entire time she was gone, for he too was paying a price. He had been sleeping on his front when he was shot and the bullet had glanced off his spine when it entered, saving his life but crippling him in the process. The doctors said that maybe in time he might get some control back, but for now he was paralyzed below the waist. The odds for his full recovery weren't good. "Ready?" he asked her from his wheel chair. "More than ready." Maria answered. "That's good." said a voice, it's owner limping into the room. "I was beginning to wonder if you were both going to make your flight!" Maria put down her bag and hugged Tonya tightly. After getting out of hospital Tonya had taken time off from the Kennel for both her own recovery and to help Maria and Joseph adjust to theirs. Her injury turned out to be more of a nuisance than anything else. Once her blood had been replaced, the surgeons just patched her up and said that nothing major had been damaged. She would limp for a while, but nothing more. The last couple of days had been spent helping Maria pack. "You're not going to tell me anything more about where we're going?" Joseph asked Maria, as she let go of Tonya. "You don't need to know any more than that it's a better place for you to get better then here in the city." Maria said, fussing with the back of his wheel chair. "I'm not sure I like this new 'take charge' version of Maria." Joseph said to Tonya with a wink. Tonya laughed and picked up the bag Maria had been carrying. She was eager for the couple to leave so she could get back to being with Stewart. His support over the past month had been just what she needed. With a smile Maria began pushing Joseph out the door. She was ready now to go back to the place she had inherited from Alan. She was ready to return to the valley.
