The "Grudgingly Good" rating indicates that I think the story is well written, but that I find some of the elements in the story so disturbing that if I were to review the story based solely on my personal tastes I would give it a "Not Good" rating. The "Not Good" rating indicates that I do not like the story. ----- Arousal Factor - This is a measurement of how arousing I found a story to be. Story Factor - This is a measurement of how good I found a story to be, devoid of whether there is a lot of sex in it or not. In determining the story factor I take into consideration the plot, the characters, and other more technical aspects, such as spelling and grammar. Possible values for Arousal and Story Factor are, in ascending order: Nonexistent, Low, Average, High, Ultra ***** REVIEWS ----- Rogue Review No. 288 - December 23, 1998 Stroke Story by MichaelD38 M/F, M/F/F Length: 8,400 words Rating: Good Arousal Factor: Average Story Factor: Low SUMMARY Bret, a famous movie actor, bangs his way across the City of Angels. COMMENTARY For the most part, this story is forgettable. It does not get interesting until Cindy, that's girl #5 in the script, enters the story. She adds some life to it. I like to believe that where you begin it less important than where you finish. Having said that, I think that the reason I did not give this story a lower rating is for the simple fact that it got better as it went along. Possibly I missed the point of the story. The author's notes indicate that this is supposed to be a satire. I guess the humor just went over my head. COMMENTARY This is a wonderfully composed story. There are two narratives that run simultaneously. The author does a wonderful job of jumping back and forth between the two. I like the characters, they both seem real. The plot is simple, but well constructed. It is the author's handling of it that really make this a treat to read. The sex is very arousing without being omnipresent. I've never mountain climbed so I will not comment on the accuracy of the mountain climbing details. There was not too much climbing jargon in this story, but there was a climbing term here and there that I was not familiar with. COMMENTARY This is really two stories, not one. First, there is the story of how Ellie and Carl wind up sleeping together [Chapters 1-4]. Second, there is the story of how Ellie comes to realize that she is more than just another pretty face [Chapters 5 & 6]. I liked the first "story" better than I did the second one. It could have something to do with the fact that there is sex in the first "story" and only a mention of sex in the second "story". I think there is more to it than that. The first "story" seems to flow more smoothly. The second "story" seems rushed. NOTE This story takes place in the north of England. The author includes a short glossary of terms that may be unfamiliar to Americans. I found it very helpful. Boswell M/F, Teen Length: 7,900 words Rating: Very Good Arousal Factor: Average Story Factor: High SUMMARY Brian falls for Stacy, but things do not quite work out as he had planned. COMMENTARY This story is about Brian's passion or obsession for Stacy, and not how he gets her into his bed. In other words, even though the sex is arousing, there is more to this story than just sex. Most of the characters are two-dimensional. Brian is the only one who seems somewhat real. Some of Brian's tactics seem a bit extreme. The author includes lyrics from several Bruce Springsteen songs. Despite the fact that Stacy is Brian's step-mother, I do not think that this qualifies as an incest story. COMMENTARY This story is extremely arousing. The characters seem real enough and the sex is very hot. What really impressed me about this story is that even though the big scene in this story was a little long, for my tastes, the sex did not get mechanical; it stayed very real for me.
