It was now about 3PM, Steve was still sleeping as they entered the room, Jennie was surprised at the amount of equipment hooked up to him. It seemed like it wasn't Steve lying there but an empty shell, long since vacated. Only the constant beep of the vital signs flickering across the monitor reassured her of residency. Elvis had not yet left the building. Approaching the bedside cautiously they stood by their knight in defective armor. Heather leaned over and kissed his lips, a single tear dropped onto the end of his nose. "I'm sorry forgive me." She whispered silently. Jennie wiped her eyes, his hand in hers, "Please don't go we love you." She cried in an inaudible hush. Somewhere in the dark recesses of his mind, Steve sat at plain wooden table across from Death. Wearing a black hooded cowl it offered him eternal rest, peace, quiet, and no more taxes. Best of all it promised almost certain entry to heaven, and reunification with past love ones, a most tempting offer. Steve looked over his shoulder into the glare of the media spotlight that was waiting for him if he returned. He saw his life and those of the girls being ripped apart on a hundred channels, trials, divorces, careers shattered like French lead crystal on Italian marble. Perhaps it was better this way, a short term pain, for long term security, dead men can't talk. He held out his hand towards Death. A white bony hand emerged from beneath robe and took him in its grasp. From somewhere behind him Steve heard a horrible penetrating scream. Jennie screamed over and over again, as the monitor flat lined like pizza dough though a set of steel rollers. Heather rushed to the door and yelled for help. A team of nurses and guys in white coats with stethoscopes round their necks came rushing in pushing Heather out into the hall. Jennie was put into a corner as they started. Two people began CPR with the others readied the crash cart. Someone yelled CLEAR! And then placed a set of electro-shock paddles on Steve's chest. A nurse hit the switch, which sent a high voltage charge surging through his still heart. His torso kicked up as they stopped to watch the monitor, no change. The CPR team went back to work. The girls and family crowded around the doorway watching the drama unfold. Bridget buried her face in her Dad's chest as he held her. Winona held hands with Heather and Sarah. alyssa went into the room to be with Jennie. They watched helplessly as the medical staff tried to save him. After ten gut wrenching minutes, they stopped working. Silence enveloped the room. "NO-O-O-O-O-O!" Lisa cried out in the background, Jennie's mother comforted the girl. The room was quite. The girls could scarcely believe it he was so close. "Time of death?" A doctor asked. One of the nurses looked at the clock on the wall, "3:15PM." A single beep sounded as she answered. The green line of the EKG monitor jumped to life,"Beep...beep...beep..." His body shuddered, as a nurse strapped on an oxygen mask an read out his vital signs. His sister rushed to the side of the bed, Jennie and Alyssa pushed their way in. Lisa picked up his hand and held it tightly to her chest. "Come on Steve you can do it! Come oooonn!" Another women pushed her way through the crowd,"Lisa!" Steve's sister half turned to see who had called her,"Cathy in here! " The woman rushed in. Steve looked into the blackness of Death's hood, a clock appeared in thin air over its shoulder, the time read 3:15. The screams tugged at his soul like small children seeing an ice cream truck. Death tightened it's grip, then he heard a soft voice calling him familiar, clear, and confident. Then a second voice joined the first, then another and another. Death suddenly let go of his hand, it turned walking away into nothingness. The clock began to tick, Steve got up from the table and moved towards the sounds of the voices. His eye's fluttered open he could smell jasmine. At first he could only make out vague shapes of faces, soft voices. Things began to come into focus, he recognized Alyssa, then Jennie, their eyes puffy and red. He could not place the other two female faces one looked like Jennifer but different older maybe. She did look cute though, they both did. Maybe he'd get to slip woody into their wet willing lips one day, actually they kind of reminded him of his sisters, Cathy and Lisa. How many times had he spied on them, when they were taking showers, or masturbating in their bedrooms as they grew up. "Steve can you hear me?" Boy they even sounded like his sisters that would be some fantasy if... "Steve wake up!" His eyes blinked once, twice. "Lisa? Cathy?" He said groggily, a shiver of sickness and guilt went through his system like a bottle of laxative. "Hey little brother, glad to see ya!" Cathy smiled generously. "Welcome back shrimp." Lisa said as she kissed him. He looked around and smiled at Alyssa and Jennie, they seemed relieved. A doctor leaned over and put a cold stethoscope on his chest. (You know they can build an artificial heart, but can they keep those damn things warm Nooo!) the doctor nodded, "You'll be fine. My name is Alan Edwards, can you tell me yours?" Steve shook his head, Colt, Steve Colt." The doctor then asked Steve if he knew the date, where he was and how he felt. The doctor smiled and looked at the girls, "Looks like he'll be okay." The medical team left and moved everyone out of the room. Steve touched Jennies arm as she turned to leave. "Heather?" Jennie smiled softly and put a hand over his, "She's alright she's just outside in the hall." He pulled himself up, getting what would have been a really fun rush if it hadn't hurt so much. "Y-you o-okay?" She patted his hand, "Just fine." She kissed his forehead and pushed him back down by the shoulders. "Now you get some rest, let us take care of you for once." Reluctantly he sank back into the bed, and watched her sexy little ass wiggle out of the room. He looked up at the EKG monitor as his heart began to palpitate, he forced his mind to think of Hillary Clinton naked. Out in the hall another wave of emotion subsided within the group, they walked back to the waiting room as the doctor explained to them what had just happened, and how it would affect Steve's recovery. In short he had just had a heart attack which, had made him clinically dead for a minute. The good part was that his system was able to jump start itself back into awareness, and he had woken up. Now that he was awake, his chances of recovery were much better. Although in the meantime he'd still be very weak and only be awake for brief periods. "When can we see him?" Cathy asked. "Why don't you come back tomorrow morning. After he's had a good nights rest." Doctor Alan suggested. Before everyone split up Lisa introduced Steve's other sister Cathy around. "My gosh Steve said he knew people in L.A. he never named names." She exclaimed. "Do you guy's have a place to stay here in town?" Heather asked. "We're at the Regent." Cathy replied. Heather reached into Her purse and pulled out a note pad and pen. "You can all stay with me, my husbands out of out on tour, it's just me, and Eva. I have plenty of room." Nancy smiled "Thanks for the offer but I have business here in town, I'll be better off at the hotel." Lisa took the paper, "We don't want to impose." Heather smiled, "Don't worry, besides if you stay in a hotel you won't have any privacy once they find out you're here. Go back to the hotel pack, and get a cab." Cathy hugged the actress, "Thanks, we really appreciate this. Oh could you tell us where Steve was staying we'd like to get his things" Heather patted her on the back, "Your welcome." Winona spoke up, "I'll arrange to have his things sent over to Heather's." Nancy interjected, "Could I have his laptop sent to my hotel?" Heather turned and looked at her, "Why don't you come over to my place for dinner tonight, and you can get it when you're there?" Nancy accepted and got Heather's address. "As a matter of fact anyone who can make it, Dinner at my place tonight at 6PM." She turned back to Steve's sisters and Nancy,"Just dress casual and I suggest you leave by another exit, so the press doesn't see you with us." The girls bid the others goodbye and turned down the hallway. "Sarah and Winona came up besides Heather as they continued down the hall, "That was genius." Sarah whispered. "Now we'll get to know everything about Steve in no time." Winona chimed in. "Amanda would have been proud." Heather smiled wickedly. The group went back downstairs and ran the press gauntlet again. Most of the news that day focused on Mr. Fonda, the press smelled blood and were still hoping for a trial. However it was a bit more restrained than the O.J. Simpson event. Two factors enabled this, the first being the death of Princess Diana Spencer, and Mother Theresa a few weeks earlier. Much of the world's attention was still caught up in their tragic deaths. The second factor was Ted Turner's close relationship with Peter and Jane Fonda. Nobody wanted to piss off a guy who could buy the station and turn it into a parking lot. Winona was the last to arrive at Heather's. Sarah, Alyssa, and Jennie were the only ones able to attend, as well as Jennie's family, and Alyssa's parents. Heather's mother answered the door and let her in. She could hear the others laughing in the living room. The two dogs came up yipping and barking at her, Heather shooed them away and kissed Winona on the cheek. The others wave hello and Winona went over to the Chinese take out buffet set up on the side table. Lisa was telling them about Steve in high school. "Ya he was pretty active in high school, Debating team, Chess club, Astrology club, and Home Ec." Winona sat down at the table next to Sarah, "Steve took Home Economics?" Cathy put down her glass, "Ya he figured it was a way to meet girls." Alyssa leaned forward and looked down the table, "And did he?" Her mom frowned at her, "Alyssa Jayne, mind your manners." Lisa grinned,"Not unless you count Patty Armbruster, she had this crush on Steve all year. But she wasn't quite his type, to wild." Lin Milano smiled, "From what I've heard, I only hope my daughter meets someone as nice as your brother one day." Alyssa made a face,"Mother!" Her mom smiled sarcastically, "Just looking out for you dear." The other girls smiled a tiny bit wondering what Alyssa's mom would think if she knew the truth about her daughter and Steve. Alyssa looked at her dad, who was staring at Sarah, "Oh let her be Lin." He said off the cuff. Alyssa was slightly taken back that her dad was gawking at a girl younger that she was. Of course nothing surprised her anymore about her dad since she posed in the nude back in 1996 and showed him the pictures afterwards. His reaction was not the angry, tyrant that she expected, but rather compassionate and understanding. "Was he popular in school?" Jennie asked. "Well he had friends, but I wouldn't say popular, he was one of the nice guys." Lisa replied. "I remember one of the girls in my class was getting harassed her first day in school, by these three guys in the hall. Steve intervened and told them to leave her alone." Heather laced her fingers together and put her elbows on the table, "Let me guess they backed off and Steve got a date with the girl." Cathy grinned, "Not exactly, they stuffed him into a garbage can. Lucky for him Cathy and I came down the hall and heard him yelling. So we kicked the crap out of them, and pulled him out." Everyone laughed gaily. "Boy was he ever mad." Cathy recollected. "That must have been so humiliating, for him." Winona sympathized. "Yea every time he got in an argument with someone, they just said. What are you going to do about it Stevee baby, get one your kids sisters to beat me up?" Lisa laughed,"Dad signed Cathy and I up for karate lessons when we were real young so we could take care of ourselves." Sarah looked at Cathy, "What level did you guys get to?" Cathy reflected, "Black, but we haven't done any in years." Heather's father laughed, "You see Heather I'm not the only dad like that." Cathy turned, "You know karate too?" Heather shook her locks, "Jujistu, Tae Kwan Do, and Smith and Wesson. Not a lot but just enough, it was me the guys were afraid of not my dad." "How come Steve didn't take lessons?" Alyssa inquired. Lisa answered, "I guess dad figured he would be able to take care of himself. Who knew we'd out grow him at the age of fourteen, don't think he ever got over that. It's probably why he joined the Army." Heather's dad let out a loud cough everyone turned his way. Nancy grinned, and whispered, "The Marines!" Cathy and Lisa looked at Mr. Locklear, "Were you in the Marines Mr. Locklear." Heather's dad stuck his chest out, "Bill, and yes I was a Colonel, ma'am, and I'll thank you not to get the Corp mix up with those over armed Boy Scouts again." Heather made a face, "Dad was in so long, I was eight years old before I realized his name wasn't sir." That cracked the group up, even Heather's father managed a smile. "Tell me something Cathy, what made Steve sign up for the Marines." Nancy asked. Cathy and Lisa exchanged looks. "Didn't he tell you?" Nancy shook her silver hair. Lisa started off, "Well we don't no either, but we think it was money." Heather's mom spoke up, "Unless things have changed, the Marines don't pay that well on a Jr. officers salary." Cathy shook her head, "No that's not it. Our parents only had enough money set aside to send one of us to college. Since Steve was the oldest he got first dibs, and he had the marks to go to." Cathy looked down at the table, "But in his senior year his marks went down, and he decided to enlist, go to a Military College." Heather was puzzled, "Why the drop in marks?" Lisa shrugged, "He never said, but I think it had something to do with the money. He knew if he went, Cathy and I would never be able to attend. So the money was passed on to us, and working nights we managed to get through." Heather sighed,"Your brother is quite a guy." The girls smiled, "Yes he is, we just wished we saw him more than twice a year." Nancy waved her hands,"Don't look at me I keep telling him to take some time off, but he never listens. Last year he spent a total of four months in New York." Lisa smiled, "I must say it's very nice to meet you in person." Nancy raised her glass, "Not quite the Battleaxe, you expected huh?" Lisa grinned shyly. "I know what your brother calls me behind my back. What was that now as he so eloquently puts it, the Mother of Saddam Hussain, the reason depleted uranium bullets were invented." Cathy tried to put up a defense in her brother's name, "I'm sure he means that in the most affectionate way. "Nancy smiled gently, "It's okay, I just keep bugging him to find a nice girl settle down and get married. I love your brother like a son, but sometimes he can be as thick as a bomb shelter. " Lisa leaned forward, "Is he seeing anyone? He never tells us anything." Nancy shrugged, "Well if he is it's one secret he's managed to keep from me." The girl's faces went blank. Winona shook her head, "Did he ever do anything selfish, or mean?" Cathy smirked, "You mean like the time he sat behind me and my boyfriend at the movies, and kept coughing every time the poor guy made a move." Lisa cringed, "Well at least he didn't leave you at Macdonald's one night to walk home five miles." Alyssa frowned, "Why did he do that?" Lisa pursed her lips, "Because he wanted to take Leslie Sanderson to visit her grandmother." The sound of laughter ringed the table. A soft cry came from one of the nearby bedrooms, Heather and Jennie exchanged glances. Their mother's got up and left the room, Jen's mom came back a minute later with her grandchild Luca Bella. Jennie took her baby at the table everyone fussed over it. Heather's mom came back with her baby Eva. The same maternal thought struck Alyssa, and Winona. As the night wound down arrangements were made to show the girls around town and make sure they were well taken care of during their stay. The evening ended on a positive note, Heather's parents would take the sisters to the hospital in the morning, the others would drop by later in the day or evening. Nancy left for the hotel taking Steve's laptop with her, she'd be meeting with the local CIA branch to do a damage assessment and find out what else Steve was keeping from her. The other's helped Heather clean up then left for home. Steve slept well the drugs kept him in a state of bliss and happiness. About 9AM he strained to open his eyes. "Morning, shrimp." That could only be Lisa, he decided. His eyes began to focus, her worried face came into true color. She bent down and kissed his cheek. "You had us going there for a while." He turned his head slightly to see Cathy standing just behind Lisa. He tried to talk his voice creaky and dry. "Th-anks." He murmured around the tube in his mouth. His chest hurt heavily, it felt like someone had put him back together with staples and glue. "Be quiet, don't say anything just rest." His sister continued. He smiled like a drunk,"You both look terrific." Cathy was only an inch shorter than Lisa, at 5'10" she had a more rounded figure and fuller breasts. Her hair was dyed strawberry blonde and curly. Cathy tilted her head, "Must be the morphine talking. There's someone here who would like to meet you." Cathy moved away as Heather's father stepped forward, "This is Mr. & Mrs. Locklear, Heather Locklear's parents, she was one of the actresses you saved the other night." Steve shifted his gaze to the couple Heather Had her mother's looks. "Mighty honored to meet you son. Our little girl's all we have, and on behalf of the family I thank you very much for stepping in like you did. I might add the Corps quite proud of you too." Heather's mom just cried and kissed him. Steve tried to move his arm, it felt like it was made of lead. "Now don't bother with formalities, like your sister said you just get better." He looked back at his sisters, "Stay-ing lo-ong?" Lisa nodded, "A week and guess where were staying? At Heather's place. We had dinner last night with Winona Ryder, and Jennie Garth. Alyssa Milano is such a nice person, not at all the like the papers make her out to be!" Cathy interrupted, "Oh we meet your boss Nancy too, she's not Atilla the Nun you said she was." As usual his sisters were talking fasterthan he could listen. "She said she'd be in later today to see how you were." Steve smiled, "Nice." Lisa smiled, "We should let you rest, the Locklear's are going to show us around town, and we'll drop bye tonight." She squeezed his hand, Cathy gave him a peck on the cheek, and the group left. Nancy was taken directly in to see James, the Station Chief of the C.I.A. Los Angeles office. "Lovely to see you again Nancy." He got up and came around the front of his desk. She let him hug her,"You're looking well James, thank you for the call." She sat down as James got her a coffee from the machine on his amour. "How's Muriel doing these day's?" Nancy asked accepting the cup. "Oh she's fine, the boy's are doing well at UCLA, you're invited for supper tonight by the way." She smiled she hadn't seen the boys since they were in grade school, "That sound's wonderful." she smiled. He handed her a briefing folder, "How's our boy holding out?" She smiled, "He's a fighter, the doctors say he should pull through." James nodded, "Good, that's good. His sister's handling this okay" Nancy smiled,"They're doing well, considering what has happened, Miss. Locklear has taken them in. "What do we know about the man who shot Steve?" James shrugged,"As far as we can tell he was some kind of obsessed fan gone nuts, the cops are raiding his home today. Our preliminary checks show nothing unusual. Low income single white male, loner type, a few minors on his police record." James sat back in his high leather chair, and leaned back. "Our boY Steve has been quite busy lately. As far as we can make out, his meeting with Miss Fonda and Ryder was accidental, literally." Nancy grinned, "So he was responsible for rescuing them." James nodded, " Although what he was doing on that road on his way to the airport we don't know yet. Nor do we know the basis for his relationship with the other actresses." Nancy looked up from the folder, "What other actresses?" James continued, "We back checked all his phone, fax, e-mail, and hotel records during this trip. When he was in Japan, his phone records show two incoming calls from residential phones. in L.A. One number belongs to actress Jennie Garth, almost an hour, the other from Miss Alyssa Milano, also about an hour. She also sent him an E-Mail." Nancy's eyebrows went up, "Any idea of the content's of the conversation?" James shook his head. "I have his laptop, we can see if the message is still on file." They were disappointed to find that it wasn't, but glad to see that his security practices were on the up and up. "At that point we checked on their movements, and guess what we found. Miss Milano, Garth and third actress Sarah Michelle Geller, all stayed at the same hotel as Steve when he passed through L.A. on his way to Japan. Nancy frowned, "What where they doing in a hotel?" James smiled, "Emmy Awards, and they won big time." She nodded,"Damn his expense account is going to be big." James turned the page, "On Steve's return from Japan, L.A. airport lobby cameras show that he was met by a young girl, we believe it was Miss Geller." The photograph was poor but it clearly showed Steve pushing a baggage cart, between two very young, and beautiful girls. They wore sunglasses and caps but you could tell it was them. "Who's the other one?" She said giving the photo back to him. "That is Miss Jennifer Love Hewitt, also an actress. We're not sure which one Miss Geller was there to meet, but as you can see they all left together. We think Miss Hewitt's being on the same plane as Steve was coincidental, since she made a last minute booking and there is no evidence of their meeting while in Japan." Nancy Shook her head, "Wow, no wonder he's never home. I assume all these women were also at the Fonda party?" James put his hands behind his head,"Yep." Nancy sipped her coffee, "And what about Miss Locklear the intended victim, any direct link to Steve." James bit his lip, "You're not going to like this, Colonel Locklear retired ran a check on Steve a week ago, he got all of his USMC service records, and since Steve was one of our people. The computer red flagged the search and we sent someone to ask a few questions. The reason given for the check was that Steve was going to be a movie consultant, something called"Dead Ends." Supposed to be the sequel to "True Lies", from what we've been able to find out no such film exists, or is being planned." Nancy shifted uncomfortably in her seat, crossing her long legs in front of her. "So Miss Locklear knows who Steve really works for." James nodded,"And judging by the closeness of her relationship with the others, they probably Know too." Nancy nodded in agreement, "I had dinner with some of them last night at Heather's, Milano, Garth, Ryder and Geller. They seemed pretty tight, and they where fascinated with Steve's up bringing. You should have seen the way they questioned his sisters." "One more thing, the night after they all left, a body was discovered in a sub-basement of the hotel." Nancy leaned forward a bit. "A black male petty criminal, drug user, cocaine overdose. We can't link him to any of them, but sure is a hell of a coincidence." Nancy put the folder back on the desk, "This could be bigger than the O.J. Simpson fiasco. "My God what has he gotten himself into?" She asked rhetorically, and "What is the Company going to do now?" James smiled briefly, "What we do best, nothing. We sit tight and hope they don't dig too deep, and if they do we stonewall em, and muddy the facts. Of course as of yesterday Steve is officially relieved from the Agency. Not that he ever did work here." Nancy stood up, "I'll do what I can to keep the press out of your garden, hopefully this won't get to messy. I'll leave his laptop her so your people can go over it. Also I couldn't find his Company I.D. since the media or cops aren't on to us by know we can assume one of the girls has it." James grimaced, "Damn, you'd better find out and fast. That's the last thing we need." "I'm on it. Did he learn anything interesting in Japan that maybe he forgot to tell me about?" She winked. James smiled, "Sorry Nancy, I don't know what you're talking about." Thanks James." They shook hands,"I'll tell Muriel to be expecting you around 7PM? And when you see Steve give him our regards." She nodded and left for the hospital. Checking in at the nurses station Nancy was glad to find out Steve had slept well. She tried to enter the room noiselessly but was betrayed by her 2-inch heels. His eyes cracked open like shutters, he managed a weak,"Hello." Nancy smiled pleasantly and picked up his hand, "How are you feeling?" He grinned slightly, "Like hell, how's James?" She pulled a chair close to the bed, and sat down, "He's worried, say's to give you his best wishes." Steve took a deep breath, or at least what he could. "What happened?" Nancy told Steve all about the excitement he missed while he was indisposed. He was surprised hear about Mr. Fonda, it made him worry about Bridget, thank goodness her family and the girls were there for her. What she didn't tell him was what James had dug up on him and the celebrities. Although Steve had a pretty good idea they already knew something about it. As he imagined the media was milking this for all the money it could make, he only hoped that none of the girls would get hurt in the process. After twenty minutes Nancy could see that he was tiring, so she got up to leave. "Nancy?" She moved closer to him almost face to face. "Tell James.... " She smiled, "You're worried about your new friends." He nodded. "James say's don't, unless of course they seduced you into giving away code secrets?" That made him smile awkwardly. "It was tough I didn't give em nothin." She was glad to see he still had his humor. She kissed him motherly like on the cheek and rubbed his head. "One last thing, your ID did you have it on you last night?" He gave a sharp nod. "Well it hasn't surfaced, any idea on who might have picked it up?" He tried to remember the when was last moment he knew he had it, "Ask Miss Locklear." Nancy nodded,"Okay, rest I'll see you later."
