"Continue northeast," said Ulrym from his seat behind Azblan. "Sir?" shouted the dark knight. "We don't have anywhere better to search, follow his directions," replied Joar. The red dragons veered to the right, gliding on the strong thermal winds above the jagged mountains of the Desolation. "Incredible," observed Phaelam as he gazed up into the Tower's upper stories. The interior of the Tower was one tall empty shaft with a spiraling staircase along its walls. Doors were also spaced along the walls at intervals. What made this tower different than other edifices visited by the knights was the abundance of plant life that rested everywhere. Green leafy vegetation thrived in planters set along the stairwell. A massive garden of small trees and bushes resided in the center of the ground floor, fed by sunlight that poured down from the distant ceiling of the Tower. A gentle breeze blew from some unknown source, rifling the tree branches and wafting the heady perfume of the garden's flowers all around the circumference of the entry floor. "It's beautiful," said Allustria, Ayarlin nodding in mute agreement. "Keep your guard up," warned Linsha, searching the garden for possible ambushers. "Ayarlin, where would the magical artifacts be stored?" "There could be lower levels with storerooms, or there could be some magic in the laboratories upstairs or in one of the master wizard's chambers." "We'll have to separate. You'll come with me, Ayarlin. Phae, you take Allustria with you." "Sure," nodded Phae, motioning for Allustria to follow him to a trapdoor set in the floor on the far side of the room. Linsha watched the knight and cleric descend, Allustria casting a Light spell on a rock she took from the garden beforehand. "Follow me," said Linsha, leading the way up the foliage adorned stairs. "There's the Tower!" declared Ulrym, pointing excitedly. "We see it," said Joar, giving the Tower and the surrounding terrain a careful once over. "Guards!" exclaimed Azblan just before a burst of arrows snapped against Joar's dragon's belly armor. "Take them out," ordered Joar, directing his mount towards the milling squads of goblinoids on the ground below him. The red dragon carrying Joar inhaled deeply, then vomited a bright shaft of fire at the screaming goblins in front of it. Dozens of goblins were incinerated into ash immediately, while others were horribly burned. Joar smiled with relish, directing his mount to gain altitude before banking to make another dive run. "I'm cold," muttered Allustria, walking close to Phae as they descended into the lower level of the Tower. "Stay alert," admonished Phae, his sword hand clenching into a fist with frustration. The companions climbed down the staircase until it emptied into an empty square room. Two doors provided exits, one right, one left. "Which one?" asked Allustria. "Left," said Phae, opening the wooden portal and peeking beyond it into a black passageway. Allustria lit up the hall with her glowing rock, allowing Phae to proceed forward. They followed the passage to the very end, where it ended with another wooden door. Phae tried to open the door, but the portal would not grant entry. "Locked," growled Phae impatiently. "Guess we go right," said Allustria. They returned to the entry room, opening the right hand door to see where it led. It too opened into a long, narrow passage that led to a closed door. Phae tried this door, which opened quite easily. Carefully passing the doorway's threshold, Phae detected the shambling skeletons with plenty of time to spare. "Can you repel them?" asked Phae sharply. "No, I don't have my holy symbol." "Perfect," frowned Phae, diving into the room, lashing out with his right boot, shattering a skeleton's left leg. "This certainly wasn't what I was expecting for a Tower of High Sorcery," remarked Ayarlin, admiring the plants as she followed Linsha up the spiraling stairwell. Linsha didn't reply, she kept her eyes forward, alert for anything strange to occur. Wishing she had a good blade or even a dagger, the knight ascended two levels before the plants struck. Ayarlin was attacked first while she stopped to smell a particularly pleasant flower bloom. Green vines lashed out from the planter, wrapping around Ayarlin's wrists and waist. The elf managed a brief shout before a vine wrapped around her face, gagging her. Linsha spun around at the noise, her eyes widening in astonishment before tendrils of thorns exploded from behind her and bound her body. Linsha grunted as the tendrils' thorns bit into her flesh, numbing her limbs. She watched while Ayarlin was dragged towards a huge blossom with a glistening green phallic probe. Vines pulled off Ayarlin's robe, turning her naked body around to face the quivering blossom. Ayarlin screamed into her gag as the erect green shaft moved forward and nuzzled her pussy. Linsha returned to her own dilemma when several red buds attached themselves to her arms and neck, biting through her skin. The knight gasped as the buds sucked out her blood, trembling as they fed upon her. Linsha began feeling weaker, her struggles became less violent with the approach of unconsciousness. Ayarlin moaned when the flower probe slid into her pussy. Her thighs quivered while the blossom covered her crotch, the probe thrusting back and forth inside her vagina. Vines surrounded her breasts, squeezing them tightly, caressing her warm flesh. A numbness began to grow from Ayarlin's cunt, expanding to her legs and stomach, stealing all sensation from her bound body. Using the last of her strength, Ayarlin tried to free her hands for one last desperate spell. Phaelam smashed the last skeleton to rubble with his joined fists. The knight wheezed for air, his tunic torn in several places, blood flowing freely from nasty scratch wounds. Allustria hurried from the doorway to Phae's side, setting down the glowing rock to take off Phae's shirt and examine his injuries. After Allustria cast her healing magic on the worst of the cuts, Phae replaced his shirt and began searching the room. Phae found a key amidst the bones of one of the destroyed guardians. Smiling triumphantly, Phae returned to the locked door, sliding in the key and twisting it open. Pushing in the door, the knight halted suddenly as he beheld the racks of weapons and armor stored within. "The Goddess be praised," smiled Phae happily. "Dragons fry troops good," observed Minion from Gnasher's side. "Indeed. Sound the retreat, we seem to be outmatched for the time being." The little goblin grasped a crumpled iron horn from his belt and blew with all his might. The call echoed over the battlefield, prompting the few survivors from the dragons' assaults to retreat back towards Gnasher's smoldering command tent. "What about great magic?" reminded Minion. "We will retrieve it another time, when the opportunity allows," replied Gnasher as he mounted a particularly massive dire wolf. Minion hopped onto his own wolf, racing after his lord who led the retreat into the craggy wilderness of the Desolation. "They're on the run!" laughed Jenni, her face flushed with cruel excitement. "Yes, now to claim the prize. Ulrym, how do we enter the Tower?" shouted Joar. "We must open an entrance on the roof!" replied the mage. Joar nodded, directing his dragon mount towards the peak of the tall Tower. The dragon spat his fiery breath, burning a roughly circular hole in the Tower's cone shaped roof. Uncharacteristically brave, Ulrym tied a rope from his waist to his saddle horn, jumping from his hovering dragon steed to the still smoking entry hole on the tower. The thin wizard disappeared from sight, his rope becoming slack after Ulrym freed himself from it. "Go after him, Jenni. I don't trust him alone with anything really powerful." "Nor do I, Joar," agreed Jenni, copying the mage's rope descent to the tower. Ayarlin bit through the vine gagging her mouth, her teeth easily parting the plant's soft flesh. Spitting out sticky sap from her mouth, the elf girl aimed her right hand at the neck of the large blossom and cast her Magic Missile spell. The neck exploded in a cloud of green ichor, the blossom shuddering before it fell away from her aching pussy. The vines released their hold, letting Ayarlin free herself to help her trapped comrade. Linsha lay limply within the thorny embrace of the vampire roses, her skin chalky white from blood loss. Ayarlin tugged on Linsha's barbed restraints, the thorns biting into the skin of her palms, numbing her hands. More tendrils shot towards Ayarlin, wrapping around her wrists, paralyzing her thin bare arms. Ayarlin gasped in pain, falling to her knees as a tendril wrapped around her neck, biting into her warm flesh. Ayarlin blinked when a glowing sword severed the tendrils entrapping her. Phaelam shouted a battle cry as he hacked at the rose plant feeding on Linsha. Allustria cradled Ayarlin's naked body, pouring healing energy into her slim frame. After destroying the vampire roses, Phae carried Linsha to Allustria, who used the last of her magic to stabilize the blood-drained knight. "There was a loud noise upstairs, I'm going to check it out," said Phae, proud in his gleaming silver platemail. "Wait for me," replied Allustria, grasping her new stout quarterstaff to follow the enthusiastic knight. The companions raced to the top of the spiral staircase, which led to a single iron reinforced door. Phae tried the door, not surprised when it resisted his attempts to open it. "Get back," warned Phae, brandishing his glowing long sword with both hands before hacking at the stubborn portal. The door smashed in easily, permitting Phae to charge inside. The knight found Ulrym holding a pulsing orb lovingly in his hands, a dark robed cleric standing impatiently behind him. "Damn! A Solamnic Knight!" spat the woman, raising her spiked mace for battle. "Let me handle it," said Ulrym, his voice silky with confidence. He raised the orb to eye level, holding it out towards Phae. The Solamnic Knight snorted when nothing happened, tightening the grip on his sword as he marched towards his foes. The orb's light danced in front of Phae, drawing his gaze, beguiling him. "Stop. You will not interfere with our escape," said Ulrym with a cold smile. Phae halted in his tracks, his eyes locked on the swirling lights within the Orb. Ulrym held out the Orb until he reached the dangling rope that led back to his hovering mount. Ulrym whispered to the Orb, commanding it to shrink to the size of a marble. The mage reverently placed the Orb in a silk belt pouch before grasping the rope and agilely climbing up through the hole in the roof. Jenni frowned at Phae, debating whether she should kill him now while he was still entranced by magic. Sighing loudly, the cleric slid her mace into its holder ring on her belt, taking her own rope back to her waiting dragon. The two dragons flapped energetically, gaining some distance from the Tower before gliding away on a powerful mountain wind. Allustria finally reached the doorway, carefully scouting the room first, finding only Phae standing perfectly still in the middle of the wide circular chamber. She drew close to the knight, staring into his unblinking eyes, recognizing the effects of a Charm Person enchantment. She slapped him several times painfully, calling out his name. "What? What happened?" stammered Phae, blinking his eyes and looking around vacantly. "The dark knights got away. Did they take anything?" "Yes, I think so. An orb, a pulsing orb." "We better go. It looks like the dark knights got what they were looking for," frowned Allustria, leading the confused knight back to their waiting companions.
