                                                                   XX.

As it happened, none of the other girls in Cabin 12 showed up for any
attention the rest of the week. I saw Karin again, and Brittany, but it
seemed as if my role that summer was complete. I wound up my classes,
satisfied that I had done a good job with the girls. Brittany and several of
the other novice girls indicated intentions to continue their studies when
they got home. I never figured out the mystery with Amanda, and resigned
myself to accepting what Beth had said.
Closing day came sooner than I had expected.

I woke up still not sure whether was going to take the job for the second
girls' camp next month. Gerald and Barbara would probably want an answer
today, and I didn't know what I would tell them.
I thought about what it might mean. A new cast of girls to work with. More
unexpected sexual scenarios. Probably more mysteries no one would explain to
me. And continued risk of being discovered, and possibly busted, for what was
going on. I wasn't sure I was up to it.
But-Beth was coming back, whether I did or not. She had made that clear. If
I said no, they would have to find someone else. Someone else Beth might have
to sleep with. That sent a stab through my gut, as much as we had talked
about what this thing meant, about separating sex and love.
Love. Christ. I had known her three weeks and I was already thinking about
whether I loved her. Okay. No. It was too soon to believe I was really in
love with her. I had taken a few psychology courses and knew better. I had
never believed in love at first sight. Except, it was different when it
happened to you.
I hadn't been kidding when I told Beth I had been looking for someone like
her. Bright, funny, and mature, athletic and outdoorsy. Not to mention being
a major babe. With red hair, which was an issue no matter how I wanted to
deny it. Whatever else went on, I wasn't letting her get away. But was this
situation simply too weird for me to deal with?

The families arrived at noon, and I spent about an hour meeting all the
parents of my students. Brittany's folks sought me out right away. Her mother
was an older version of her, more developed but more weathered. Her father
was tall man, mid-forties, but prematurely gray.
"So this is the famous Mitch," her mother said. "We've heard so much about
you."
"I've really enjoyed working with Brittany. She's been a great student. I
hope you look into getting her regular classes when you get home."
"We've been talking about it. I don't know where this came from. The karate
classes here were sort of an afterthought. I never expected her to get so
into them."
"It happens. I'm glad she enjoyed it so much."
She leaned in, squeezing my arm.
"I'm sure part of it was working with someone as cute as you."
She laughed, and hugged Brittany, and Brittany handed me her camp yearbook to
sign. I knew better than to try to get cute, so I wrote a short bit about how
I enjoyed working with her and encouraging her to keep working on her martial
arts.
	Then she hugged me tightly.
"I'll never forget you," she whispered.
	"Or you. Good luck."
	"Thanks."
She let go of me before her parents could start to suspect anything. She
wiped her eyes and walked off with them, waving.
Karin's parents showed up a few minutes later. Her mother, to my slight
surprise, was attractive but nothing to get excited about, certainly not as
cute as her daughter. Her father, though, was one of those rugged, male-model
looking types, and I decided she had gotten her looks from him.
We made some idle chit-chat for a few minutes.
"Karin has a lot of talent for this. I hope she keeps working on it."
"I'm glad she's so into it," her mother said. "So many kids these days, they
don't have any direction or discipline. It's helped her a lot."
	"I can tell."
I signed her yearbook as I had done with Brittany's, and she gave me a big
hug.
"Thanks for everything. I'll miss you."
	"You too."
I talked to Michelle's parents a little later, who seemed to decent, though
rather uptight, and I understood why Michelle couldn't tell them about being
raped. But they made a few comments about how Michelle seemed happier than
she had been when they sent her up here, and I gave her a quick wink. Then I
signed her yearbook, and they left.
Robin showed up with her father, who struck me as kind of goofy. I signed
her yearbook too, and she gingerly broached the idea of communicating with me
afterward. Her father shrugged, not seeming to care.
"She's so into school," her father said. "Not shopping or boys like any of
her friends."
I gave her a quick look of sympathy.
"She's very bright. I hope she keeps up with her reading."
She hugged me goodbye and left.

Eventually the campers were all gone, and the counselors began packing up.
Most of them were coming back in four weeks, so the goodbyes weren't
particularly extended. I ran into Kim, who gave me a quick hug.
"I have to go. I know you haven't decided what to do. But you're going to
need to have a talk with Beth."
	"I know."
I procrastinated for about twenty minutes, packing up my stuff. I realized
some of the counselors were already leaving. I finally told myself that Beth
was liable to assume I was taking off, and leave on her own.
I put my bags in my car and walked back down to the cabins. Cabin 9 was on
the other side of the swim area from where I had been staying, and I passed
the lake and a few other cabins on my way there.
Beth sat on the front steps. She saw me and stood up. She smiled, but I
could see the tension on her face.
"I guess it's time for that discussion," I said.
	She sighed.
"Not yet. I need you to go down to the docks first."
	I started in confusion.
	"The docks?"
"Yes. Go down there, and when you're done, come back here and we can have
that talk."
I stared at her for a second.
	"I don't understand."
"I know. You will. Go down there, and come back."
	"You're not going to leave?"
	She took my hands.
"No. I promise. I'll be right here. I'm not going anywhere."
	"Okay."
She squeezed my hands and let go. I looked back up the path, then at her.
	"Go. Please."

                                                                XXI.

I turned back the way I had came, utterly baffled at her request. When I
rounded the trees into the swimming area, the explanation began to unfold. At
the end of the dock, I saw Barbara standing, arms folded, looking out across
the lake. Heart pounding, I walked out to her.
She turned toward me as I approached.
	"Mitch."
	"Hi."
	She touched my arm.
"You look as if you've seen a ghost. Relax. This is nothing bad."
	"Okay."
"I wanted to tell you how happy I am at how things have turned out. You've
done just a wonderful job with the campers. Although . . . I know the
responsibilities turned out to be considerably more than you had anticipated."
I wanted to deny it, but her face told me everything I needed to know.
	"You knew."
	She laughed.
"Knew? I started this whole thing. Did you really this could have been
going on for nearly twenty years, right under my nose, without my knowing
about it? Did you really think the counselors, barely adults themselves,
could have coordinated this so well, could have gotten all their girls into
the same cabins year after year?"
	I exhaled slowly.
	"I wondered about that."
"No. I knew. I keep a very close eye on what's going on. I can't tell you
how impressed I am with you. It doesn't always work so well with the man we
choose for your role."
"They said something about last summer."
	She held up her hand.
"All in good time. I need to start at the beginning so you understand."
	"Okay."
"I had never intended to do anything remotely like this when Gerald and I
founded the camp back in 1975. It happened almost by accident. I had always
been a very conservative young woman. Gerald is the first and last man I've
ever slept with, but I often had feelings and ideas that I didn't quite
understand. The third summer we did the camp, I found myself falling in love
with one of the female counselors. Her name was Jill. I didn't understand
what was happening, but one night we just ended up making love. We carried on
a torrid affair for about a week.
"Then, one night, one of Jill's girls discovered us. But instead of being
shocked, she was actually intrigued. Jill explained to her what was going on,
and discovered that this girl was having confusing feelings of her own.
"After that, I got to thinking. This was in the late '70s, during all that
nonsense about free love and open marriages, and I got the idea that maybe I
could start helping girls who had the sorts of troubles I had had. In the
beginning, it was very informal, just Jill and me working with a handful of
campers. But over the years, it's evolved into the complex group you know."
"And what Beth said, about why you're doing this . . . ?"
"Yes. I believe very strongly in everything they told you. I know I've
helped avert a lot of problems and probable pregnancies. Some girls react
well to messages of abstinence; some do not. It's those latter girls I've
tried to help."
She took a moment to it that sink in.
	"Does Gerald know?"
	She smiled.
"Let's just say . . . that Gerald has his own predilections. Predilections
that don't involve little girls."
It took me a second or two to see what she was really getting at.
"Oh, my God. Are you telling me that Gerald-"
"Yes. And for longer than I've been doing this thing of my own. In fact, it
was discovering what he was up to that really drove me into Jill's arms. But
I've learned to deal with it. He and I have an understanding."
"He's doing the same thing with the boys?"
"Not quite. His 'fraternity,' such as it is, is strictly a pederastic
exercise. None of the female staff, with one exception, have the slightest
idea what's going on."
I thought about that for a moment, feeling dizzy. Gerald, of all people,
pursuing the young boys. It meant, of course, that he had been doing that
when I came up here as a camper years ago. I tried to remember if I had
noticed anything unusual.
	Barbara smiled.
"You're thinking of your summers up here."
	"Yes."
"There was no chance you would have gotten involved. Gerald picks only the
boys who show interest in that sort of thing. He knew you were into girls,
never mind that you were the son of one of his best friends. It would never
have happened."
I took a breath and looked out across the water. All this time and no one
had suspected a thing.
"And you're involved with the campers too?"
"Less than I used to be. In the beginning, I worked alongside the
counselors. Now, I merely supervise, and sometimes select a girl for myself."
	I looked back at her.
	"Did you . . . this time?"
	"Yes."
	"Who?"
"I'm sure you can guess if you think about it. The girls told me you had
suspicions."
I was baffled for a second, and then-
	"Amanda."
	"Yes."
"I ran into her coming back from your building one night. I had no idea what
she could be doing."
"She told me about that. She was scared to death you would guess what was
going on."
	"I figured she might be a lesbian. But I never thought . . ."
"She isn't the least bit interested in boys. So you wouldn't have seen her
regardless."
	I paused for a second.
	"What happened last summer?"
	She smiled.
"We aren't always as adept at picking the men as we are with the girls. As I
said, Gerald and I have an understanding, which involves not digging too
deeply into each other's affairs. But that sometimes results in embarrassing
miscommunications. We had the bad luck to pick someone who turned out to be
one of Gerald's former campers."
	"He was gay."
"Yes. Kim went to him the first night, as she did with you. After some
extreme awkwardness, we realized what had happened. We had a good laugh about
it, but it meant we had no one for the girls that summer."
"Is it anyone I know? Is he still here?"
	"Yes."
And the answer was then obvious.
	"It was Phillip."
	"Indeed."
"That was why he was so dismissive when I mentioned Amanda. He knew what was
going on."
"Yes he did. He came to me that night and told me about your conversation.
I had to explain to him that you were working with the girls this time, lest
he think our secret was getting out."
All the little mysteries that had been bugging me slowly unraveled. It made
some sense now, twisted sense but sense nonetheless.
But a new question grew in my mind.
"Why are you telling me all this? You didn't have to do it. You could have
let me just take off none the wiser, even if I was going to keep seeing Beth.
She told me there were going to be secrets, and I had more or less accepted
that."
"I know. There's a deeper reason, the whole reason I wanted you to come up
here."
"I thought you said it was an accident. A last minute thing."
"No. I'm sorry. The story about the injured instructor was entirely
contrived. I didn't want to give you too much time think about it, in case
you might be inclined to turn Gerald down when he asked. I've been planning
this for years. I had to wait until I was sure you were old enough and mature
enough to handle what I'm about to tell you."
My jaw inched down toward my chest. She took a deep breath and began her
explanation.
"Gerald and I cannot do this forever. We want to retire in a few years.
However much we've enjoyed doing this, it is a tremendous amount of work, and
we're ready for some years of relaxation together. We've talked about what to
do, and we've settled on passing on the reins to some former staff, people we
trust, and people who know the full story. We believe in what we've done, and
we want people who can carry on our work."
"But you don't mean the boy's camp. Someone else would have to do that."
"Correct. We've identified four people, two Gerald has picked, and two that
I have."
Now my sense of shock was as extreme as it had been.
"It's Beth. You're passing this on to me and Beth."
"That is what we want to do. I have to apologize for something, and please
try not to take this the wrong way. My intentions were as honorable as they
could be. I've thought for a long time that you and Beth would make a good
couple. I knew the sorts of girls you liked, and the types of men she did.
You told me once, you probably don't even remember this, that you liked
redheaded girls. You were sixteen, she was fifteen, and I almost introduced
you then. But something told me the time wasn't right. I was afraid you
would have some wild teenage affair for a few months, then break up and never
want to see each other again. I didn't want to take that risk when I thought
you had such potential together."
"You want me and Beth to supervise the girls' camp? And the sorority?"
"Yes. I know this is a big responsibility, and I don't want to put too much
pressure on you. I know you've only known Beth for three weeks, but I think I
know a good thing when I see it. You don't have to give me an answer right
away, and you wouldn't be taking over for years anyway. But if you're
interested, we want to start the process of training you for the job now."
I tried to catch my breath.
"I need to think about this."
"I know. It's a great deal to take at once. And don't worry about the
karate instructor position for the next camp. We have someone lined up in
case you feel you can't continue doing it."
"Well, that much, I think I can do. The rest . . ."
"I know. Take all the time you need. This is a long-term plan for the
future, and there is a lot that has to happen first. Such as you and Beth
graduating from college."
	"Okay."
"I don't want to disrupt your relationship with her. Try to make a decision
about that without considering the rest."
"But . . . if I say no, about taking over, would she do it with someone
else?"
"No. I don't think so. She's told me as much. It's you or no one. If Beth
doesn't want to do it, I'm going to ask Lisa."
	"Not Kim?"
"She's too young, and frankly she's not serious enough about it. I know she
would do her best, I just don't think she has the necessary skills."
She put her arms around me and hugged me.
"Just think about it. That's all I'm asking. Now go back and see Beth
before she thinks you ran away in fright."
I left Barbara on the dock, walking back toward the cabins in a daze. I
thought I had known what was going on, but it had been just the tip of the
iceberg. As manipulated as I felt, I couldn't deny that it smelled right. I
had enjoyed most of the last three weeks. What I hadn't enjoyed were the
things I hadn't understood, and I had the big picture now.
And, of course, there was Beth. I wanted her. I knew that. And she
appeared to be a package deal. Could I take the rest of it along with her?
I saw her sitting on the stoop where I had left her. She looked up,
apprehension filling her eyes. I held my gaze on her, and her face seemed to
soften. She stood up, walking slowly toward me.
	"So."
I didn't answer her. Instead, I stopped, taking in her beautiful form. Was
I going to let her get out of my life just because it required a change in
lifestyle?
I put my arms out and embraced her. She gasped, hugging me, and began to
shake, laughing and crying at the same time.
	"Oh, God."
"Don't say anything. You don't have to say anything at all."
	"Okay."
I held her, not sure where we were going, but knowing I wanted her at my
side.

                                                    THE END
