What had seemed excruciatingly painful at first was now a warm envelope of intense feeling, sending her into a disconnected state of simultaneous totality and nothingness... She caught fleeting glimpses of recognizable forms, brief images of familiar people, places and things in her delirium. She started feeling sensations of being pulled somewhere, but with no indication of where she was heading; unable to exert any conscious control over her body, she simply went with the flow. Tonya realized that she could move freely; it confused her, since she didn't remember being released from the test bench, but she couldn't feel anything restraining her movements. She walked, or something that felt like walking to her, anyway; whatever she was walking on appeared to be solid, so she cautiously made her way forward. As she moved forward, her steps slid, giving Tonya the feeling that she was skating, her years of training letting her legs adapt to the slippery surface instantly. She found herself looking down to see if she was wearing skates, but was surprised to realize that she was barefoot; it was almost as if her feet were skates themselves! Tonya quickly started to relish her new-found freedom, going into her championship routine almost instinctively; the feeling was much more exhilarating than she had ever remembered it being, and it inspired her, filling her with incredible energy! She decided to try a triple axel; she went into her approach, launching herself higher than she'd ever been before! 'One...' she counted to herself. 'Two...' 'Three...' 'FOUR?!?!?' Tonya almost broke her position from the surprise, but made an absolutely perfect landing! Shocked, she stopped herself... "I just did a QUADRUPLE Axel! That's IMPOSSIBLE!" Unbelieving, she had to try again; she went into her approach the same as before, launching herself and making four revolutions, culminating in a flawless landing for a second time! "This CAN'T be happening!" Tonya cried out, stopping herself. "Why not?" Tonya turned, the familiar voice startling her; standing in front of her, dressed in a resplendent silver outfit, was Nancy! Something about her looked... different, though... "Why are YOU here?" Tonya was confused, but definitely NOT happy to see her tormentor. "Because I'm your WORST ENEMY!" Nancy gloated! "What's going on here???" Tonya demanded, in a mixture of confusion and anger. "What do you THINK is happening? "Answer me, dammit!" Tonya was filling with rage against Nancy for the torment she'd suffered at her hands, "I just did something that's TOTALLY impossible!!! How did I do it?" "How do you THINK you did it?" "I don't know!" Tonya cried, frustrated, "I shouldn't be able to do a QUADRUPLE Axel, but I just did!!!" "So why are you complaining?" Nancy replied, a smug grin on her face, "You should be happy about it!!! HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!" With that, Nancy took off, gracefully skating away from Tonya, who stood motionless, furious, and livid; composing herself, she raced after Nancy, faster than she'd ever gone before! Tonya felt like she should be a speed skater, as fast as she was going! Nancy's gracefulness was deceptive; she skated at what seemed a leisurely pace, yet Tonya lagged farther and farther behind, no matter how fast she raced! The more Tonya fell behind, the more she became determined to catch her ex-rival! Nancy made a graceful stop, holding her arms out, as if to let Tonya catch her; Tonya furiously raced toward her, determined to grab Nancy and beat her senseless! At the last possible moment, though, Nancy simply slid out of the way; Tonya's momentum kept her going, and trying to stop, she would up sprawled awkwardly on the ground! "HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!" Nancy's laugh was that of the Devil himself, taunting and humiliating her enraged opponent! Tonya regained her footing, springing back toward Nancy; once again, Kerrigan slid out of the way at the last moment, but Tonya remained standing, turning for another attempt at catching her foe! She missed again, as Nancy laughed demonically, and stopped to make another try! Tonya realized that Nancy had moved to keep from being caught; she thought for a moment, then started another run. She kept Nancy in her sights, looking for any sign of movement on Nancy's part; at the moment before they collided, Nancy moved to the right! Tonya saw the movement, and sprung on her left leg, leaping to the right, too! This time, Tonya was too quick for Nancy! The enraged Harding grabbed Nancy as tightly as she could, and tackled her in a move that would have made a pro linesman proud! The two women fell to the ground, Tonya furiously slugging Nancy as hard as she could! Tonya maneuvered her way on top of Nancy, and kept pounding and beating Nancy, harder than she'd ever fought before! Nancy didn't seem to be putting up much resistance, but Tonya, in her prodigious rage, couldn't notice! Finally, Tonya grabbed Nancy's hair with her left hand and started beating her face with her right! Time and time again, she pounded Nancy's helpless face, each blow only adding to the fury! Finally, Tonya took one BIG swing at Nancy's head, and her left hand tore free!! Looking in her hand, Tonya was horrified to find Nancy's FACE! She gasped in sheer terror, her blood running cold, thinking that she'd beaten her ex-rival to DEATH!!! The shock that she'd gotten was nothing, though, compared to the emotional jolt she got when she looked at Nancy's head; she was unable to keep from releasing a blood-curdling scream when she saw the sight that lay before her... Chapter 26 Tonya's face went ashen white as she realized that underneath Nancy's face, was HER OWN!! She started shaking, not sure what to do, but wanting to escape! She looked at the face in her hand, her grip disappearing as her hands went limp with fear, dropping it! Still shaking, she slowly rose, wanting to run as fast as she could, but she remained in place, transfixed by her fear! She gently nudged Nancy's body with her foot, to see if she was conscious... "BOO!!!" The response sent Tonya sprawling backwards, falling onto the ground! The faux Tonya laughed, then slowly got up, brushed herself off, and walked towards Tonya... "GET AWAY FROM ME!!!" Tonya went into hysterics as her double approached her! "WHO ARE YOU???" "Can't you see for yourself?" Nancy/Tonya replied. "You... You CAN'T be..." "Like I said, babe, I'm your WORST ENEMY!" "What..." Tonya's fear started combining with confusion again, "What do you mean???" "Who do you think your worst enemy is, stupid?" "Nancy?" Tonya was still fearful, but growing more and more confused by the moment, "Jeff? Who?" "You STILL don't get it, do you?" Nancy/Tonya replied, "After everything you've been through, are you telling me that it hasn't sunk in what this is REALLY all about, girl?" "I... I... don't... understand..." "Tonya, I'M your worst enemy!" she said, pointing to herself. "B... but... but you're... you're..." "Yes...?" "You're... ME!!!" "EXACTLY!!!" Nancy/Tonya slapped her hands together to make her point clearer; Tonya was startled by the sudden noise! "But... How can YOU be... my worst enemy... when you're ME?" "Tell me, Tonya," Nancy/Tonya asked, "What does that say about YOU?" "Uhhhhh..." Tonya hesitated, trying to decipher the meaning in her Doppelganger's question, "Are you saying... that I'M my OWN worst enemy?" "BINGO!!!" Nancy/Tonya jumped up & down, unctuously squealing like a game show contestant! "But... How can it... how can I... be that way...?" "Think about how much you HATE yourself, deep inside," the ersatz Harding pondered, "Think about the way you've been treated all your life; why would you put up with it?" "Because..." tears started welling up in Tonya's eyes, "I hated myself?" "That's right, girl," Nancy/Tonya's voice became soft and comforting, "There's been too many people in your life who should have been caring and supportive who weren't; you've never really learned to care about yourself..." "Do YOU," sobs started to punctuate Tonya's speech, "h... hate me, too? I mean... since you're... you're really... me...?" "No, I don't hate you," Nancy/Tonya consoled her, gently embracing her true self, "There's a part of you that loves yourself, and I'm that part, Tonya!" As Nancy/Tonya tightened her embrace, Tonya's tears started flowing more profusely; she completely broke down in her double's arms, bawling like a baby as she was being comforted. "There, there," Nancy/Tonya softly cooed, "Just let yourself cry it out, and you'll feel better..." The two Tonyas gently rocked back and forth as Tonya released all her pent-up emotional anguish; the more she cried, the easier it was for her to cry harder, and her other self simply held her and comforted her as she sobbed heavily on her shoulder. Time had no meaning as the depth of Tonya's pain was depleted of its lifelong burden of suffering, guilt, and self-loathing. She could have been crying for mere seconds, or years, but paid no mind as her catharsis continued unabated. After what seemed like an eternity, Tonya's wailing finally subsided; her eyes remained red from the many tears she had shed, but she managed a glimmer of a smile as she tried to regain her composure in the arms of her loving side. The twin Tonyas continued their embrace, feeling each other's love and caring; Tonya felt a new warmth starting to emanate from within her body, the emotional hurt being replaced with a soothing sensation that seemed to fill her emotional void with pure, caring, unconditional love. This was a new feeling for her... As she filled with the newfound feelings, she sensed her twin self somehow getting closer, almost as though they were melting into each other; they were sharing the very essence of their beings, and the negative feelings she'd felt were gone, perhaps forever! Tonya opened her eyes; she was surprised to find that her Doppelganger was nowhere to be seen! She looked around, frightened that she'd lost her newly-won sense of security, but then heard a voice inside her head... "I'm with you, Tonya; I'll always be with you!" "But where'd you go?" "I'm where I've always been, Tonya; I just had to be something you could see and touch and feel for awhile so that you'd know that your soul could be healed." "So where do I go now?" "You have to break out through that wall, Tonya..." Tonya looked far ahead, and noticed a wall rising up from the ground in the distance. "How do I break through it?" "You just DO, Tonya..." "Won't I get hurt?" Tonya asked herself, "It looks pretty solid to me..." "Just believe that you CAN do it, Tonya..." Tonya looked at the wall in the distance; she thought about what her twin self had told her, and remembered the quadruple Axels that she had been able to do previously. She decided that if she could do that, she could get through the wall, so she resolved that she would break through! She took a few deep breaths, then started skating toward the wall; she built up her speed even faster than she'd gone before, and aimed herself directly for the wall! Faster and faster she went, and everything started to seem like just a blur! The wall loomed closer, and she willed herself to go faster and faster, and then... SMASH!!! The wall crumbled from the impact! Tonya kept going, her speed barely diminishing from the collision; she stopped, turned back, and skated over to the wall. She couldn't believe that she'd passed through the wall without hurting herself, and at that moment, she realized that believing in herself was what had allowed her to triumph over the heavy obstacle! She skated away from the wall; as she got farther away, she started feeling herself stiffen up. She wondered if she'd hurt herself going through the wall, but then her arms felt like they were being pulled up, and her legs were being bent into a kneeling position, becoming harder and harder to move... Tonya suddenly realized that she was back in the test bench, and after a moment, realized that she'd never been out of the heavy restraints that had bound her for so many hours! 'Was it just a dream or something?' Tonya thought... "It was real, Tonya," her double's voice replied, "And I'm still here with you..." Chapter 27 The Doctor and Nancy were back in the control room once again, monitoring the numerous readouts as the master timer approached the 24-hour mark. With 5 minutes to go, he pressed a button on the panel marked "Completion Sequence", which caused a green light to come on; each of the monitors subsequently indicated "Completion Sequence Activated", one after another. The level indicators the readouts slowly crept towards zero; the indicators for Tonya's vital signs showed that she was going into a relaxed state as the stimulation subsided. As the last few minutes slowly passed, the Doctor brought a small box into the test room, laying it down near the test bench. Tonya was becoming more aware of her surroundings, no longer in sensory overload from the intensity of the stimulation she'd been receiving. She felt herself returning to a normal state of mind, and soon, she heard a disembodied, passionless voice in her headphones. "The procedure is now complete." Nancy joined the Doctor in the test room; the lights, which had been dimmed for the duration of the test, now rose to their full brightness. Nancy put clamps on the various tubes that ran to the various implements that had been inserted into Tonya's bodily cavities; after they were clamped, the Doctor disconnected them from the various pumps, and attached them to corresponding nozzles on the small box he'd brought in, then removed her earphone/eyepieces. After the tubes had been re-connected, he started releasing Tonya's restraints; the yoke around her head was raised, the hand restraints deflated, and soon, her arms were free! The straps across her back were undone, then the straps around her thighs, knees, and finally, her ankles were released, and she was totally unfettered! Standing on each side of her, the Doctor and Nancy helped Tonya get off the test bench; her footing was unsure, and they had to hold her tightly to keep her from falling. The Doctor picked up the box as they left the room, and walked Tonya into a room marked "Recovery", where they sat her in a chair made up of several padded sections that would conform to her body, making sure that the tubes weren't getting pinched in between. The Doctor deflated the gag, unfastened it, and slowly pulled the feeding tube from Tonya's stomach; she moaned as the end of the tube was removed, and took several deep breaths to relax herself. "How do you feel, Tonya?" "I... I'm not sure... how to explain it..." Tonya replied, her mind trying to grasp words sufficient to describe her ordeal. "What happened to you while it was going on?" I... I did things that... that I... never could do before..." Tonya explained, "And then I saw Nancy... and I got mad at her..." Nancy blanched at this, her mouth turning into a frown. "...and I chased after her..." Nancy gave the Doctor the Evil Eye; his response was simply to hold his hand up to keep her silent. "...when I caught her... I started beating her up... I mean, really badly..." Nancy gritted her teeth and clenched her fists; the Doctor had to hold his finger to his lips and silently shush her to keep her from interrupting Tonya's train of thought. "...and I beat her so badly..." Tonya went on, a tear welling up in her eye, "that I tore her face off!" This time, it took the Doctor's hand on Nancy's shoulder to keep her in check; she was clearly incensed at Tonya's revelations! "But the weird part about it..." Tonya continued, "was that when I ripped off HER face, MY face was underneath it!!" Nancy's jaw dropped in shock! She looked at the Doctor, who simply nodded to her, trying to calm her down. "What happened after that?" he asked. "She..." Tonya grasped for the right words, "She told me that I... I was... my own worst enemy... and she said that... that I... hated myself... but she... she was part of me... a part that... that loved myself..." Nancy's expression went from shocked to utterly confused; she looked over at the Doctor, who smiled at her. "Very good, Tonya," he said, "what was it like for you to realize how you really felt about yourself?" "Weird..." she replied, "It was like... suddenly... something flashed in my head... or something..." "Like an epiphany or a revelation, Tonya?" "Yeah! That's right!" "And what was it that you realized?" "I realized... that everything that happened... was because I hated myself... deep down inside..." she said, still wanting to make sure the words were right. "And how did you react, Tonya?" "She... the other me... held me... and had me cry..." Tonya explained, "It felt... good... I guess... I felt like... like I... like I was turning... into a new person... I felt... stronger... more at ease... stuff like that..." "After that?" "She... she was gone... and I felt her inside of me... like she was inside my... my soul... and it felt good..." "What happened next?" I heard her... her voice... in my head... She showed me a wall and... and she told me to skate toward it... I had to break through it... I did... I got going... really fast... I didn't think I could... but I told myself that I... that I could... and she told me... I could... too..." "Did you hit the wall, Tonya?" "I hit it... and it broke down when I did!" "Excellent, Tonya!" the Doctor exclaimed, "That's exactly the kind of thing that I wanted to happen!" "It was?" Tonya asked, confused. "It shows that once you started feeling good about yourself, you could break through the wall!" "But why... why a wall...?" "It's a subconscious symbol," he explained, "Things like going through a door, breaking through a wall, and things like that mean that you've gone past the limits that you've been under." "But... I haven't..." "These are psychological limits, Tonya," he continued, "A lot of the time, you don't even realize you have them." "I... I don't?" "No; about the only time you're even aware of them is when you just can't seem to make yourself do something you want to do." "So..." Tonya asked, beginning to understand, "when I broke... through the wall... it was really... a wall in... in myself?" "Exactly!" "And..." she continued, "that's why... that's why I feel... a lot... um... better now...?" "Very much so, Tonya," the Doctor responded, "you went through a very cathartic experience, and got rid of a lot of the emotional pain that you'd been keeping inside all these years." "So..." she asked, hesitantly, "does this mean... that I'm... you know... DONE... with this therapy...?" "Almost, Tonya," he replied, "all that's left now is the Final Test..." "What is it?" "I'm going to let you rest for awhile, Tonya," he said, softly patting her shoulder, "and don't worry about the Final Test; you've gone through the worst already." Tonya breathed a sigh of relief, relaxed, and soon, she was sound asleep.
